Intel AMT-how to disable and verify

2012-01-24, 17:59 PM
I entered TP setup and disabled Intel AMT, for which have no need as standalone computer not in a network. Nevertheless, the Intel Management and Security Status application still shows AMT as "enabled." What to do?

Betreff: Intel AMT-how to disable and verify

I guess:

Connect you laptop to ethernet (with cable) and try to disable Intel AMT then.

After saving the changes turn off the computer.

Betreff: Intel AMT-how to disable and verify

2012-01-24, 22:38 PM
Thanks. why would being on ethernet help? Anyway, if I am mucking around in BIOS, don't want to be online. My research shows this ain't easy: AMT is in effect a BIOS rootkit that on a laptop enbles remote wireless control of your x220 even when it is turned off! Intel says that only "full unprovisioning will prevent PC self-initiating automated, remote configuring process" and that a full unprovisioning returns AMT to factory default state. Full unprovisioning is by resetting a specific jumper on the mobo or by earsing all configuraiton settings, security credentials and operational and networking settings. So, the question is, why is there even a setting in BIOS for enabling/disabling AMT and what does it really achieve? And do I need to spend big bucks on a tech to get this **bleep** thing disabled?

Betreff: Intel AMT-how to disable and verify

I am having the same problem! Cannot disable AMT!

Uninstalled everything, played in BIOS following several advices, including to disable DHCP setting for the network port within AMT.

I want to use the W520' built in network port for link aggegration, but INTEL driver says it can't group this port just because AMT is still somewhere enabled.

Very annoying. especially that I did NOT order the notebook with this option enabled.

My machine: W520 W7-64 bit INTEL SSD

Did you try to configure AMT on your machine at some point? I thought you would have to turn ON dhcp in AMT for an adapter to use dhcp. You can always pull the CMOS battery, that will unconfigure AMT. You then disabled AMT in the BIOS and still the intel adapter teaming (link aggregation) option is still greyed out?

Pulling the CMOS battery will also unconfigure AMT. There are also some menu options in the orom to unprovision a machine.

Dear ChristopherLang,

tried that today but with no success.

Intel network driver still says that AMT is enabled at this port.

This AMT behaves like a virus!

Take care!

Re: Intel AMT-how to disable and verify

Here is one way I am thinking would work:

go into the AMT menu and set the AMT options to "none". There is no way to do this remotely because of AMT security considerations.

Here is a second way I propose you try do disable the AMT

you must  enter the AMT (press Ctrl p) to disable the DHCP first, then disable the AMT in BIOS.

Verify the BIOS Settings before entering the AMT Menu to change settings.

1) Power on the system, when the screen show Lenovo ThinkCentre BIOS then press "F1" to enter the BIOS setup menu,

2) Confirm the Lan Card is Enabled

3) Enter the AMT Menu to verify to setting

4) Confirm the AMT Function is Enabled

Disable the DHCP Client on AMT

1) Power on the system, when the screen show Lenovo ThinkCentre BIOS then press "CTRL‐P" to enter the AMT setup menu,

2) Press"1" to enter the AMT setup menu

3) Enter the password and press enter (Default password is admin)

4) AMT will requires the user to enter a new password. (Remark: password must at least 6 character with the combinations of numeric value / upper and lower case character / special character)

5) AMT will require to re ‐enter the new password to confirm the password changed

6) Choose "Intel Standard Manageability Configuration" and press "enter"

7) Choose "TCP/IP" and press "enter"

8) Disable the DHCP Client by press "Y"

9) Enter the IP Address for this computer

10) Enter the Subnet Mask for this computer

11) Enter Default Gateway address for this network

12) Enter the Primary DNS Server Address for this Network

13) Enter Secondary DNS Server Address for this Network

14) Enter the Domain Name of this Network

15) After complete the settings, then it will return to the Main Menu. Choose "Exit" and press enter to save the settings and exit the AMT Menu

16) Press "Y" to confirm exit the AMT Menu

Here is where i found this information.

Hope this helps,

Alex

This concise, plain English guide on how to follow the mitigation steps to get the status to "information unavailable", which is what you should see if AMT is completely disabled: https://mattermedia.com/blog/disabling-intel-amt/

From briefly testing this, all "Information Unavailable" means is the LMS service isn't running. It has no bearing on AMT's configuration state.
