Webcam does not work on X201.

2014-08-21, 5:27 AM

I have tried in Windows 7 64bit and 8 64bit and have had no luck.

I have googled all over and found some hints on this forum to try installing Communication Manager, but it does not solve anything. It's like the camera is not seen.

I know the camera is not broken or disconnected because LINUX of all things can see it and use it.

On the X201 page there are no drivers for the camera at all, only the communication manager install. For Win 8 it is listed that the drivers are built into Windows 8, but as far as I can tell this is not the case, unless i am doing something wrong?

Does anyone have a working webcam with their X201 at all in Windows?

Try below methods to resolve your webcam issue:

1. Check the drivers are properly installed. Go to Control panel-> Device manager -> Imaging devices and check if there is any driver with a yellow mark. Right click Imaging device and Update drivers and check if webcam is working.
2. Check in BIOS if integrated camera is enabled.
3. Press FN+F6 to open the Communications settings window and press Show my video image button to enable the camera.

Thank you for your reply however this does not help.

It does not help because 1) "imaging devices" is not a category - it's like windows doesn't recognize it at all. 2) there is no setting anywhere in BIOS to enable or disable the integreated camera, and 3) as stated in my first post FN+F6 does not help since the video options are not available, only sound options.

By the way my machine is type # 3626-HUU and the camera is definitely there, perhaps it is damaged but it is there, still works in linux however last i tried.

There is, you need to follow these steps:

screen.jpg

You choose then this option:

screen1.jpg

Then you scroll down until you see this option:

screen2.jpg

If it's enabled and it's working in Linux it will be more of a driver problem I guess...

Ah, you have solved it. I forgot to look under security at all, and i must have cleared it when flashing new bios after installing win. Thanks very much. Quite embarrasing :p

I'm glad it worked!

Sometimes the solution is trivial, similar things have happened to me too (and I'm sure will keep happening in the future :smileyvery-happy: )

Hello,

I continue to use Thinkpad X201, and I would appreciate your help.

I have an old case which cracked, and whose webcam and keyboard light work.   I bought another one used, I cloned the drive, but these two features don't work.

The old case shows imaging devices under system.  The new does not.  The old case has 1.40 bios, and the webcam is in the list under i/o and enabled.  The case I bought has 1.32 bios and does not include the webcam in the i/o list.  I can upgrade, but I am bit worried about losing the audio, as some other people in the forum.

Could there is something defective in the wiring that affects both the webcam and the light?  They are next to each other.  I would appreciate your opinion.  And how could I troubleshoot if there is a wiring issue?

thank you very much

Welcome to the forum!

The webcam and the light are controlled by the same LED cable if I remember correctly, so it could be a defective cable or also a defective webcam and light.

If you're using Windows I would run windows update and Lenovo System Update's to keep all drivers up to date, I don't remember if there is one or more possible differnt camera manufacturers. If the camera still does not work you could also try running a Live Linux Distro out of a USB drive and test the camera with it.

Hello and thank you very much for your speedy reply.  I am downloading the Lenovo updates right now, but I have a fear that this will not be enough.  An old X200 was running the thinklight and camera without the more sophisticated software.

You mentioned "live Linux Distro".  I found pendrivelinus.com/yumi-multiboot-usb.  But what do I do with it, how do I test if the camera works? I would appreciate the guidance.

I think the best is to download and run Universal USB Installer (click here!) and follow the screen instructions (the software will download and burn the Linux distro to your USB drive, make sure it's 8GB at least). Alternatively you could use Linux Mint, last time I used it had a Windows like menu

The webcam can be tested using Skype for Linux, probably is already available in Ubuntu/Mint...
