Yes, you can.

Assuming that the ISO file is the same type (Home, Ultimate, Enterprise etc) as was loaded on your computer.

YOU CAN'T activate it using the preinstalled WIndows key.

You WILL be able to activate a clean install of the version of WIndows 7 that is specified on the Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity that is attached to your ThinkPad, by using the key that is on the CoA.

Cheers,

Bill

According to http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo/642274-hearsts-guide-clean-installing-windows-7-thinkpad-3.html you can.  You have to download and run a tool that will extract the embedded OEM key.

I have not tried it.  Your mileage might vary.

The Volume License Key or the OEM key for the OS installation on the ThinkPad can't be used to activate ISO found on the internet.

The key on the CoA can be used but in any case the install disk wouldn't be asking for drivers if it is a legitimate copy.

The serial number on the CoA can be used to activate the OS ISO downloaded from the internet.

But the OEM/VLK on the factory installed OS can't be used to activate the OS ISO from the internet.

Touché.  My impression was that you don't actually need to activate.  I assumed the backup and restore made that unnecessary.

I have never had a need to go down that path.  I am not in the habit of downloading .zip files and running random .EXE's from the internet no matter how intriguing. My last resort is always to use the key on the COA under the battery.  I do pretty frequent installs (every 6-12 months) and normally use a key from my MSDN subscription.

I save the COA key for a future owner of the machine.
