Re:ThinkPad Fold - Technical Review

Thanks Rich for the great review! I am a customer from the US and ordered an X1 Fold about a week ago but didn’t see any option for one with a WAN card. Any clue on that? I’d love to use 5G ultimately with my fold.

As I said in the review, an X1 Fold ordered without a WWAN card cannot be upgraded later.  I do not know when or if the option will be sold in the U.S.  I am not an expert, but I know there are 2 different types of 5G: Sub-6 and mmWave.  One of them (mmWave) could potentially be faster, but the other (Sub-6) covers a wider area from a tower and can penetrate buildings (work indoors) better.  The card in the X1 Fold is a Sub-6 card.  I couldn't activate my card to test because my carrier (Verizon) has begin rolling out 5G using mmWave.  Both types of 5G are substantially faster than 4G-LTE.  I asked Verizon if they could activate my card as a 4G-only card, and they said I could not.  I also asked if they might support Sub-6 later, and even though I am not an expert, the people I talked to didn't know what I was talking about.  I will add that I was at a Verizon store where the I was the only customer, because virus protocols and customers not showing up for appointments.  The sales people were people I think of as "gadget crazies" and they were all huddled around wanting to play with the X1 Fold.

Thanks so much for the thorough review. It's immensely helpful for someone contemplating a purchase. Also somewhat eased my concern regarding the CPU performance.

Does the back-flap work in propping the tablet up in portrait mode? No one seemed to try this thus far. (I intend to leave the unit in portrait when connect to an external/larger monitor.)

As for Lenovo, my biggest complaint would be the omission of Trackpoint (can already see a V2 keyboard with Trackpoint, physical button & USB-C charging);

No heaphone jack?

then the penloop placement (on the left of keyboard just so the pen would be at the bottom instead of on top when machine is folded);

last but not the least, one USB-C port would also be at the bottom in landscape mode (and have to get a rather lame looking stand just to help with that...)

I think the stand is landscape-mode-only.  In portrait mode, the machine is too tall in relation to the size of the stand to be stable.  Given the thickness of the keyboard, I think a trackpoint is unlikely,
