Occasional black screens - Yoga Book

2018-07-10, 20:35 PM

Greetings ? I would like to tell you about a problem I have been experiencing with my Lenovo Yoga Book (Lenovo Yb1-X91F) since a long time.

Problem description:
While watching videos (mainly YouTube) or browsing some graphical websites, my Lenovo Yoga Book's screen would randomly go black for a few seconds then goes back to normal. Sound will still play during the black screen and I can still move the mouse.

Warning message from Event Viewer:

Display driver igfxLP stopped responding and has successfully recovered.
Event ID: 4101

Windows 10 Pro version 1803 OS Build: 17134.137

Troubleshooting steps I've done so far to fix the issue without success:
1- Updated Windows to the latest version.
2- Updated all drivers to the latest version, including the Intel HD Graphics driver.
3- Reset my Yoga Book to factory settings.
4- Clean booting by disabling all the other services and startup programs.
5- Created a new Test user account but the problem happened there as well.
6- Updated BIOS to version 04WT23WW. (Latest version)
7- Uninstalled the display driver and let Windows automatically installs it back.
8- Installed older display drivers to see if the problem still exists.
9- Created TdrDelay key in the registry.
10- Selected "adjust for best performance" from the Performance Options.
11- Closed all background apps except the browser.

I don't know when did this problem happen. I bought my Yoga Book when it was on Anniversary Update 1607. I don't remember seeing this problem back then. I remember seeing it in 1703 and 1709 and now on 1803.

The problem is widely discussed on this forum and users fixed it by installing the correct Intel Driver that Lenovo recommends from the support page. I'm currently using display driver version 20.19.15.4835 installed from Lenovo's support website.

The following article from Intel Support talks about the same problem and suggests to update the drivers to the latest version. (https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000022448/graphics-drivers.html)

In the end it says:"I already installed the latest driver from the Download Center, but the issue still occurs"
Your computer manufacturer might have customized drivers and software to enable or alter features, or provide improved operation on your computer. Contact the manufacturer for the latest updates and technical support information.
All original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) should have access to newer Intel® graphics driver versions that contain this fix.

I don't know what to do next, hope you can help me with this problem because I can't simply watch YouTube videos on my favorite Lenovo device without getting this black screen.

Thank you in advance ?
Faris

I can't pretend to be knowledgable about this but ....

I think it might help others assist if you state whether you're watching the videos through a browser or an application.

My other thought is that it might be worth trying to toggle the hardware acceleration setting in the browser if that's what you're using. The same might also apply for an app - but like I say I don't really know - and I guess the setting option may not be available in an app.

This problem occurs when I'm watching videos through web browsers such as Chrome and Edge and IE. Never had this problem while using an application. I also enabled "Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering" which I think eliminates the problem but leaves the device in a very slow and unusable state.

Another thing that is worth mentioning is that Windows Push Notifications make this problem more likely to happen. For example, if I'm watching a YouTube video on Microsoft Edge and I get a Skype push notification, there will be a high chance the screen will go black and I'll end up with the same error.

Hope this can narrow down the problem even more.

Thanks for your help ?

Had a similar problem on my main pc, so dunno if it's your case, and it was related to the Intel HD drivers.

I would suggest you a factory reset, dunno if this will fix anything but a least it will prob let you know if it's a software issue or a faulty hardware.

I have done a factory reset several times. The same Intel HD Graphics driver will be installed. I don't even remember what was the driver version that came with my device when I bought it.

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the Intel driver version. Now I am currently on 20.19.15.4963 which is the latest driver version by Intel. Lenovo recommends 20.19.15.4835. The problem happens on both drivers.

I run with the 20.19.15.4444 and didn't have that issue. This is the driver my YB come with prob. I've never manually updated the driver.

Okay thanks. I'll give it a try later today and will post back if it gets rid of this problem or not.

The problem is still happening no matter what Intel HD Graphics driver is installed. ☹
