Yoga Book: Windows 10 1809 update

2018-10-03, 9:30 AM

Just installed 1809 update on two yoga books (not lte version) (after doing back-ups and system images, of course) via Media Creation Tool. Took a bit less than 90 mins. each. No obvious problems, issues or raised blood pressure.

There'y'go.

Updating mine right now via Windows Update. Will post here if I find any issues with the new update.

You might want to check your settings afterwards. I have noticed that under Privacy "let apps use your advertising ID" was switched back on. I'm a grown-up and can do my own thinking better than their algorythms! There may be other things though .....

Mind you that doesn't mean I can spell "Algorithms" without having to look it up!

Check to see if you've lost stuff from your user folders - if not you may be OK. I've done four updates and all of them seem to be fine.

What I've read refers the lost files and no internet connection for UWP applications -  neither a big problem for me - but I'm watching out to see if there's news of other related issues before I consider restoring to the old version.

I don't have any personal documents or files stored on my Yoga Book, so I don't know if I lost any. Speaking about other problems, does this seem normal?

Not sure what your second image is - my guess is, it is what you get when you click on the Apps item in the settings menu.

Just tried it myself and the list was initially blank - but I got the side menu. I tried the Default Apps item - that worked. Went back to Apps and Features and it appeared after a moment. Did a reboot and tried it again. The apps list was slow to appear - but it did appear. (no such problems on the laptop I'm on now, which is faster and used more.)

My suggestion would be keep calm and give the system a bit of a chance to settle down and get  things sorted out. Don't imagine it will actually help that issue, but it might be worth updating your apps (if you can). Seems odd but most apps seemed to have updates to do - could be confusing the poor little dear.

Obviously if something is clearly wrong and stops you using the Book it's reason to do a restore to 1803. I've found no reason for that yet but others have it seems.

As an aside I saw on https://www.thewindowsclub.com/ they have some articles with fixes for some of the issues that have generally been reported - including recovering those lost files. Hope you won't need them yourself.

Both pictures were meant to show the strange layout of the Settings app after the 1809 update. I got it fixed by resetting my Yoga Book to factory settings (which I always do after each Windows major update). Now everything works fine and as supposed to be except for minor things here and there, mostly graphics issues. For example, check the following picture:

Notice the "minimize, restore down, and close" and how they have their colors changed. Again, it's a minor issue. Nothing annoying ?

Ah.

I didn't notice any differences like that at all, but my title bars in settings have always been all white and still are. I never really thought much about it. Other title bars have reverted to the default white. I changed the colour previously because I wanted to be able to identify the active window more easily but it's not bothering me now. I guess some things are slightly different, but found nothing that troubles me. I do seem to recall that after some updates there could be some quirks with the graphics until they had updated themselves. This version gives more control over colours in the windows than before as I recall. Perhaps what you saw was due to that. I notice there is some transparency on the left side menus which I think is new (and a slide bar for adjusting it?) - but maybe that was there before and I didn't take any notice of it.

I think there will be things that some people (including myself) won't notice intially because we all have different ways of using our devices and different things that bother us. (I am obsessive about reversing scrolling direction and having the task bar at the top of the screen - I have no idea why.)

Given the important problems some have experienced I'm a little surprised  about how smoothly this update has gone for me. My only complaint would be that I have found linking to my Android phone to be far from the "perfect match" that the tech press seem to think it is. But that may be yet another new feature that I won't actually use in the end anyway.
