Yoga book screen flickers on USB boot

2020-10-13, 11:15 AM

I am trying to re install windows 10. However, when I boot from USB the screen flickers and I cannot see clearly the prompts. Note that I had removed windows 10 before and installed Ubuntu which I now want to remove and revert to Windows 10. See attached images.

Seems like a hardware problem to me. When exactly was the last time your Yoga Book's screen didn't do this? What did you do prior to this?

First and foremost reason for the flickering screen of your Lenovo laptop can be that you are using outdated or wrong device drivers. Updating the primary drivers, graphics drivers and the chipset drivers should fix your problem.

I don't think this is a hardware problem. I had the same when trying to do a fresh install from a usb stick prepared using windows media creation. (I didn't need to do it -  was just trying to see how it might work.) I had a system backup ready in case I needed it. Restoring from a system backup would be the best course of action, but I guess you didn't make one before trying to install another OS.

I had a suspicion that the problem might be that the disk was booting to a screen in the wrong orientation - I think this is the root of the problem. (The Yoga book acts likes a tablet in portrait mode during part of an installation process.)

I'm not tech enough to know a way of getting round that - I guess it might be possible by changing a setting somewhere in the installation files. However, I tried making a bootable disk from the iso created by Sandman on the XDA forum (look here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/yoga-book/how-to/windows-guide-creating-windows-10-t3718823 ) This booted correctly - ie: in portrait mode. It's going to be fiddly to do but once you get a basic setup done you should be able to update to a more recent version of Windows fairly easily.

If I actually decide to go through the full process I'll report on it.

(I might try booting with this image and then if I can, swap the usb drive to one with a 2004 version and see if I can do it without have to go the longer route! But I may just leave well alone.)

The only other thing I could suggest was set your bios to default settings - I presume you would have changed them to install Ubuntu. But I imagine you've already done that.

Yes I have. I saw some advice to update the BIOS. Any instructions on how to do this?

I am not convinced that a bios update would help. It's often the sort of advice that's given when they don't know what else may help!

Lenovo only gives a .exe file for updating the bios which needs to be run from within Windows. (I suppose if you can boot to a command line it might be possible to run it from there, but I have no idea whether that's possible or safe to try.)

I have two Yoga Books, both with updated bios. They boot up OK with Sandmans iso, but not Microsoft Media Creator created drives ( just tried both 20H1 and 20H2).

The only thing, apart from something Sandman might have put into his image, is that I used an old (and slower?) USB drive. Whether that makes a difference I don't know.

I didn't try actually going through with an install, because I didn't need to, and trying to get it to install in UK English rather than US was a pain and I couldn't be bothered. But to save an otherwise bricked device I guess it would be worth doing whatever install you can get and then from there update and set it up as you need.

Sorry, I can't really offer anything better.
