Y560, i5, switchable graphics (5730/Intel HD), BIOS version 54.
Fan is at full throttle right from bootup. I'm sure heating is not the issue. Will a update to BIOS 71 help? I screwed up a BIOS flash last time so I dont want to take chances this time...
Also, what precautions must I take before flashing? Like running the flasher with admin privilages and switching off WiFi?

Do a cold boot before you flash it to make sure the hardware is in the right state.
Disable or turn off the virus protection before you flash it. Sometimes, the virus protection thinks the flashing is an attack on the bios and will stop the flash.
Don't know whether the new bios fixes any fan issues.

recently my y560 had a MB replacement from lenovo service centre, ever since the cooling fan is rotating at full speed. even when i switched to integrated and then dedicated GPU,no change is experienced. It is little bit annoying to hear the sound of fan wooooing while i'm working, wht should i do???, will the fan consume more bettery at full speed????
