Moto e6 does not have a compass

2020-03-22, 15:14 PM

Although the specs for the e6 include "compass", most apps say there is no compass.  It definitely does have a 3 axis magnetometer.   I found one compass app that does work. "Compass" from the Google Play Store.  Its logo is a simple red pointer.  But I do need a dish pointer or satellite finder app that works on the e6.  Has anybody found one that works on the e6?   Will Motorola provide an update which fixes the compass?

Hi Ianmcl,

Can you please confirm the apps you're using? Also, you can test the compass using the Google Maps > Touch the bullet icon or the focus icon located at the right side part of the map (that will pin your current location) > Move around and you should see the blue circle icon with a shadow fan-shaped moving according to the direction you're heading. Let me know. Thanks.

Best regards,

Getting the direction from the GPS is not a compass. The compass in the Dish Pointer Pro app doesn't work. All Tools > Compass says "Orientation sensor is missing". The astronomy augmented reality apps I tried do not orientate to the view. But the Sensor Kinetics App says the the 3 axis magnetometer is working. I would say that including "compass" in the specs is false advertising.

Hi Ianmcl,

Try to install this app and let us know if it will detect the compass.

Yes that compass works.  I found out that the orientation sensor derives its data by processing the raw sensor data from the accelerometer and the geomagnetic field sensor, but the orientation sensor was deprecated  in Android in version 4.4 (released in 2013).  Code snipits exist on how to add orientation to apps but it seems that many app developers did not code an upgrade for it.    So the problem is not  the Moto e6 but in app developers not keeping up with the Android versions.
