Moto G Power- Broken Screen by Day 3 of owning it....

2020-08-23, 20:15 PM

I bought a New Moto G Power on 8/18/2020.  I received the phone on 8/20/2020.   By 8/23/2020 the screen was broken.   It fell from the worlds most pathetically low drop and it broke the screen.  It was less than a foot.  I think I could of dropped a 1000 year old vase from the same height and it wouldn't of broke.  I called Motorola and they said that for $149 I could send it back for repair, but most likely they would not be able to fix it so they would send me a "like new device".   My issue is, I do no want a like new device.  My experience with "like new devices" from Motorola is they are total garbage..

So I am wondering, Is there a place where I can buy a glass screen without the digitizer and replace it myself?

Thanks!

Replacing the glass on the display/digitizer is challenging, not to mention restoring the seal of the glass to the housing, etc. I've tried and failed on other phones. A better approach is probably to buy a complete and tested Authorized OEM Replacement display/digitizer/housing assembly at Mobile Defenders for $59.99.  See https://www.mobiledefenders.com/mobile-parts/motorola/g-series/g-power-xt2041/oled-assembly-for-moto-g-power-xt2041-4-xt2041-6-xt2041dl-authorized-oem-vulcan.html

There's a YouTube video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Duvu0FRQcQ that should help you through the tear-down and reassembly. If you're comfortable doing the repair after viewing the video, then go for it! Otherwise, the $149 repair/replacement at Motorola might be the way to go.  Keep in mind a new G Power is selling for $229 these days.

BTW... here's a link to a really great case I have on my G Power (and similar ones on a couple of other phones before that): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B089D2R9F3 . Only $7.99 and tough as nails. Even includes a screen protector. Might help to keep you from needing another display someday after the repair...

Hope that helps!

Excellent DIY video. When I take a brand new phone out of the packaging box for the very first time, I immediately install a tempered glass screen protector and heavy-duty phone case. This is done even before I turn on the device or set it up. Protection of my small investment always comes first. By the way, these are the two items I've installed on my Moto Power G.

Omoton Tempered Glass Screen Protector

For certain..  But that doesn't change the fact that the glass sucks and Motorola's customer service is basically worthless..  I mean come on...  $149 to fix a screen of a $229 phone that dropped less than 1 foot and they can't even say for certain if they will fix the phone or send me a "like new replacement"..  That is insanity.   It doesn't surprise me though.  I bought the Moto Droid Turbo 2 and they said that screen was "unbreakable".  Well it delaminated in less than a year and in order to fix it I had to pay $100 or $200..   I guess I am the big idiot for continuing to buy Motorola phones.

As Tommy Boy said.  "All they sold ya was a guaranteed piece of ****. That's all it is, isn't it? Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will."

Hi LKline,

Sorry to hear what you've experienced. You may check Ifixit website if there are available parts for the G Power Screen replacement. You can also ask your nearest CPR store if they sell screen replacement for the G Power. You can register your IMEI here to know the nearest CPR store: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/mcp/service/open/request?linkId=54149943

G Power is not yet supported on IFixIt. Only reputable parts source for a DIY repair that I've found right now seems to be Mobile Defenders.
