Moto G Power MAC addresses

2020-09-08, 19:44 PM

Hello,

My MOTO G Power shows a different Wi-Fi MAC address in the Settings>About Phone than either adapter uses;

About Phone:                         f8:1f:32:5b:xx:xx

While connected, separately

Network Details 2.4 GHz:    a2:1c3d:e4:xx:xx

Network Details 5.0 GHz:   d6:a2:8b:0e:xx:xx

What is the Wi-Fi MAC listed in About Phone if the actual Wi-Fi adapters use different MAC addresses?

The default is to use a "randomized" virtual MAC address rather than the "hardware" MAC for both the 2 GHz and 5 GHz adapters (for "privacy"). This can cause a problem if, for example, you use a MAC access list in your router to allow WiFi access to your network, or need to reserve a DHCP IP address on the network based on the WiFi MAC.

You can switch back to the phone's "hardware" MAC address by going to Settings, Network & Internet, Wi-Fi. Select a network, and then the settings "gear" icon for that network. Choose "Advanced", and then "Privacy". On the pulldown, select "Use device MAC". Make this selection (or "Use randomized MAC" as appropriate) for each saved WiFi network.

Hope that helps!

Dan

It maybe related to "MAC Randomization."  Device operating systems like Android use a "random, anonymous device identifier instead of the real address when connecting to wireless networks. The goal of doing this is to increase user privacy by preventing network operators from being able track devices using the real address as a consistent device identifier."

According to Google, "Starting in Android 8.0, Android devices use randomized MAC addresses when probing for new networks while not currently associated with a network. In Android 9, you can enable a developer option (it's disabled by default) to cause the device to use a randomized MAC address when connecting to a Wi-Fi network. In Android 10, MAC Randomization is enabled by default for client mode, SoftAp, and Wi-Fi Direct. MAC Randomization prevents listeners from using MAC addresses to build a history of device activity, thus increasing user privacy. Additionally, MAC addresses are randomized as part of Wi-Fi Aware and Wi-Fi RTT operations." Here are three articles which explain MAC Randomization in greater detail.
