Re:TurboPower Charger Question

2020 Moto G Power charging

  • USB Power Delivery (USB PD) is a fast charging specification developed by the USB-IF organization. The specification enables higher voltages and currents, delivers up to 100 watts of power, and is free to change the direction of power delivery. It is now possible for a single USB PD charger to charge a phone, a tablet, and a laptop. Google has been pushing this approach in recent years with its Pixel phones and its Android compatibility documents suggest USB PD support may be required at some point in the future.
  • A device with a USB Type-C connector does not necessarily implement USB PD, but a device that implements USB PD will use a USB Type C connector.
  • The 2020 Moto G Power uses a USB Type C connector.
  • The  2020 Moto G Power supports USB PD without acknowledging it in its specifications, most likely to avoid the cost of certification.
  • Motorola support has acknowledged that the 2020 Moto G Power specification “10W rapid charging” should be “15W TurboPower charging.”
  • Motorola phones generally support Qualcomm Quick Charge (QC) technology through its own TurboPower quick charging scheme.
  • The QC4+ fast charge protocol is an extension of QC4.0, QC3.0, and QC2.0 within the framework of the USB PD 3.0 Programmable Power Source (PPS) protocol. QC4+ chargers are USB-PD compliant.
  • The 2020 Moto G Power can be fast charged at 15W using a Motorola TurboPower charger, a Qualcomm QC3.0 charger, a Qualcomm QC4+ charger, or a USB-PD charger.
  • A charger that delivers QC3.0 and USB PD over the same USB Type C connector will not fast charge the 2020 Moto G Power. As an example, consider the single port 45W RAVPower Model RP-PC104. Excluded from its specifications is the additional support for QC3.0 and Apple 2.4A. It charges the 2020 Moto G Power at 10W.

The table below contains time in minutes, maximum temperature in degrees Celsius, maximum power in watts, maximum voltage, maximum current, reports TurboPower, and percent charge for the 2020 Moto G Power using the following chargers. Here A to C denotes that the charger has a USB Type A connector and the device has a USB Type C connector.

  • 15W, A to C, Motorola TurboPower charger Model SC-22 which came with the Moto G6.
  • 18W, A to C, Motorola TurboPower charger Model SC-51 is the replacement for the SC-22.
  • 27W, C to C, Motorola TurboPower QC4+ charger Model SC-31.
  • 10W, A to C, Motorola charger Model SC-41 is the in-box charger for the 2020 Moto G Power.
  • RAVPower power bank Model RP-PB231 with four connectors:
    • Output 18W, C to C, USB PD 3.0
    • Output 18W, A to C, QC3.0
    • Output 12W, A to C, iSmart
    • Input 18W, C to C, USB PD 3.0
    • Input 12W, micro to A, 5V/2.4A
  • RAVPower charger Model RP-PC133 with two connectors:
    • 65W, C to C, USB PD 3.0
    • 18W, A to C, QC3.0 + iSmart
  • 18W, C to C, Aukey PD 3.0 model PA-F1.

The USB PD chargers SC-31, RP-PC133, and PA-F1 charge the power bank RP-PB231 at the maximum 18W.

In summary, if the obsolete SC-22 and the in-box SC-41 are eliminated, the remaining seven fast chargers all perform about the same with the RP-PB231 PD the winner. For a user who only charges overnight, the in-box SC-41 is sufficient, while a power user may prefer to have one or more fast chargers. The Motorola SC-31 together with the RAVPower power bank RP-PB231 make a nice combination. The RAVPower charger RP-PC133 and the RAVPower power bank RP-PB231 make a nice combination if USB PD tablets or laptops are in the mix.
