Poor camera performance and image quality

2021-07-13, 8:18 AM

I have been using moot g40 fusion for about 2 months now

The camera performance is very poor in terms of the quality of the image and the processing time it takes
The images are below average even in  very good lighting condition
Here are my suggestion and review regarding the camera

PHOTOGRAPHY

1)DAYLIGHT

_1_Primary camera 64 mp (outputs 16 mp JPEG files) (IMPROVEMENTS NEEDED)
-The photos are average

_contrasty, shadows are dark, hazy, below average HDR, average details, blown-out clouds around the sun
_this need to be fixed

64 MP HIGH RES SHOTS(atleast fix this)
_The photo is more detailed than 16 mp normal shots
_but considering a 64mp shot its not upto mark
_zooming further it oil paints the image
_the same trend of contrast and under exposed shadows is visible
_
Portrait mode (NEEDS HUGE IMPROVEMENT)
_my most used feature
_Bookeh and cut-outs are good
_But perspective is not good, it doesn't allow us to crop 2x to get the portrait effect or DSLR vibe
_It looks as if someone clicked a photo and blurred the background
_The HDR is okayish
-hazy
_Very soft photos, lack structure
_overall below-average quality

_2_Ultrawide camera 8 mp(outputs 16 mp JPEG files)  (NEEDS HUGE IMPROVEMENT)
_The photos are below average
_Very contrasty, HAZY (as if the atmosphere is too dense), too much DISTORTION around edges, too much CHROMATIC ABBERATION, details are lacking
_worst dynamic range

_sometimes I have to click multiple times and then edit it to settle down to a usable image

_3_Front camera 16 mp (outputs 4 mp JPEG files)
_Soft images, hazy, average Dynamic range

Portrait mode
_poor dynamic range
_blown out highlights
_HAZY and soft
_very good bokeh and cutout

2)NIGHT-TIME or LOW LIGHT or indoor (NEEDS A LOT OF IMPROVEMENT)

-1-Primary camera 64mp (output 16mp JPEG)
_straight out of garbage
_The night mode and normal mode photos are very similar
-The only difference between night mode and normal mode photo is in EXPOSURE,
_it seems like the algorithm is only increasing exposure and labeling it night mode
_SOFT, HIGH ISO, HAZY. NO DETAILS AT ALL
_The scene is exposed only

 -2-Ultrawide 8mp (16 mp output)
LOL
NOT EVEN WORTH GARBAGE

-3-Front camera 16mp (4 mp output)
GARBAGE

flashlight does improve

MY COMMENTS
I compared it with my moto g5 plus and there is no big difference considering a 4-year gap
I also compared with another phone at the same price segment or cheaper, i.e., MI A3 and i feel the quality of moto is not even neck to neck

I believe that the photos seem to follow a trend of HIGH CONTRAST, HAZY, UDEREXPOSED SHADOWS, SOFTNESS, POOR LENS CORRECTION, CHROMATIC ABERRATION, and don't seem to do justice to the Hardware used
This can be fixed with improved software end by moto

I hope moto acknowledge this and fix this, as this is a new device and not make us regret the purchase

Re:Poor camera performance and image quality

I had bought Moto G40 rather than other phones like Poco X3 Pro because 64MP camera and i wanted a mix between gaming and camera usage.. but when it comes to the camera the photo's details are very less.. and the photos are not good for a 64MP Camera, im not a photographer, but it isn't good for my basic photography.. Hope Motorola Dev's can work on this, its just some tuning that needs to be done, then everything good !

Re:Poor camera performance and image quality

So, I have attached a portrait JPEG, shot in indoor lighting condition

The image quality is garbage or like oil painting

The whole face of the subject is smoothened and lack structure, it made him look like alien or a ghost

The photo is under exposed, contrasty, skin tone is too darken(close to reality but not reality)

The bookeh is okaish and cut out is great

considering the lighting and F/1.7 aperture,  hoped for an exposed and structured photo with atleast nose, eyes and hairs visible but it came out to be something else

Re:Poor camera performance and image quality

Iam also disappointed with the camera performance of moto g40 fusion. its not like a 64mp camera.

Thought it will perform well since it is a f 1.7 aperture lens with size 1/2" but not the case

The images shot with them are not upto the mark... especially low light images and selfie cam. Need more optimization from software side. if optimized well it can beat many smartphones in the segment.

The camera app itself has some problems. it feels very laggy.

Hope moto camera team will take care of the problems very soon.

Thanks in advance.

Re:Poor camera performance and image quality

I have updated more samples in the google drive link
most of them are normal and night mode photos captured one after another to give an idea of how bad the image processing is
I will update more samples in the google drive link

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1mMD5RNhboFwnnUQgZfjd160FHsLpALEH?usp=sharing

Also, the HDR video recording option is absent in the Moto G40 fusion
it was present in my 4-year-old moto g5 plus

It should be included too as the sensor OmniVision ov64B and SOC 732g supports HDR video recording(as listed on their official website)

Hi,

Thank you for uploading more sample pictures for the Night photos looks like you are taking in pitch black . If we could get a few sample pictures in ambient light. Also, let us know where you are taping to focus while taking the pictures if possible can share a screen recording while taking pictures this would help to understand more about this.

Re:Poor camera performance and image quality

That oil painting is because of pixel binning filter, happens mostly on all pixel binning sensors which is why pixel and iphones use 12MP normal sensors.

Also for contrast turn on auto HDR in camera settings it's off by default.

Also you can improve a lot by using gcam, but this forum doesn't allow Links to that nor sharing it here. But try BsG one that's the best.

Also wide angle camera is among the best in this price range .

But I agree they can improve on processing part. Moto stock app processing sucks especially image stacking aka nigh mode.  It uses heavy denoiser which blurs out alot and instead should use a slow shutter speed for more light gathering.

Some good facts about this omnivison sensor is that's it has fast mipi lanes "it can do 8K recording  with appropriate SoC".

Which means it can easily deliver 150+Mbps video bitrates easy with opencamera or filmic pro or mc24fps apps.

Also this ov64 sensor can grab onto focus even in low lights!  Compared to the 108mp samsung sensor in g60.

Main thing is even with 1000-1200 iso sensor isn't that noisy especially in manual mode ie no post processing.

Also your expectation are quite high

Yes it's a f1.7 lens but not an actual 1.7 like a dslr!

It's still pretty small. But it does provide f1.7 like bokeh within its focal range .
