G7 Video bitrate control for 4k mode?

2019-04-22, 12:28 PM

I ran a few 4k video captures with my new G7 and noticed the video quality was awful. I moved the clip to my desktop and did a bitrate inspection and the files had a bitrate of 17Mb/sec for 2160p at 30 fr/sec!  What, ... my old G5+ records at 51 Mb/sec at 2160p.

In G7 settings I see options for resolution and frame rate nothing about quality or bit rate.

Am I missing something here?

Hi WallEyedG7,

Thank you for posting. There is no option to change the bitrate for video recording. You may try to use 3rd party camera applications if that could improve the bit rate for video recording.

Best regards,
Zeke

Thanks Agent_Zeke for the feedback. Dissappointing on two levels. First 17 Mb/sec encoding rate is not sufficent for HD video let alone 4k. This decision renders video recording at 4k with the G7 as useless. Second there should be some degree of rate provided to the user. If a user wants to strangle the bit rate for a specific need that is one thing. However to constrain all user recordings to that low bit rate is a bad decision.

I like most of the other aspects of the phone but decisions like this will cause me to rethink my next phone purchase. When moving to newer generations of devices one should not have to give up capabilities or features especially with increasing prices.

Downloaded CameraMX for the G7. This app has bit rate controls for UHD/4k video up to 72 Mb/s. Recorded videos now have a usable degree of quality to them. Thanks for the pointer to 3rd party apps.

If you want to pay money. Mind you it costs total of around $30 then go with filmic pro. IMHO it's the best app for video recording on a professional level and will even record in cinema quality and is even used by professionals.
