Moto G7 Play on Sprint MVNO: should I update to Android 10?

2020-09-14, 16:32 PM

Title says it all.  I received the Android 10 update notice last week, but have been postponing the update.

I saw in one post that it is not only the G7 Google Fi phones that have the problem with LTE on Android 10, but also non-Fi phones on Sprint MVNOs.  Is this true for the G7 Play?

I am on the Sprint MVNO Tello.  Has anyone else using Tello updated a G7 Play to Android 10?  Any problems with LTE or otherwise?

My phone was not bought through Tello.  It is a Moto unlocked phone purchased at retail.  (Tello has told me the G7 Play, as well as the regular G7, has been having problems after the update, and suggested I not do the update.)

Thanks!

Hi c_p_l,

It will be my pleasure to assist you. I appreciate that you're aware on those reports on Google Fi G7 devices. Retail devices are not affected and I don't see this being reported on G7 Play. I would accept the software upgrade if I get a pop up. But it's up to you, if anything comes up just let us know. We're here to help. Thanks.

Best regards,
Rich

Thanks Agent_Rich. But on 9-7, you replied to someone who said their phone was a G7, but NOT a Google Fi device that: "Yours must be on Sprint MVNO". So exactly which G7 models are having problems with LTE after the Android 10 update on Sprint MVNOs? Tello, the Sprint MVNO I use, is telling me not to update because there have been reported problems with the G7 Play, and that the issue is being investigated with no estimate of when it will be fixed.

I'm with Hello mobile and Android 10 has been a pain. Immediately problems with mms, network and call quality. Wish I knew before hand.

Hi c_p_l,

The Sprint MVNO is different from Google-Fi reports. I don't recall it being related to Android 10 from which I can tell with my previous cases. You are welcome to wait to update if you want to.

Hi GueMaster,

This is odd, let me report this. Please update your profile with the current phone, carrier and serial number -- this will help me investigate. Please make sure that the options under Settings > System > Motorola Privacy are on as well, and let me know (just reply here) if it's okay for me to look at your apps to see if they are a source of problems.

See here for the instruction.

To capture Bug Report:

Go to Settings > About phone > Build number

Tap Build number seven times. After the first few taps, you should see the steps counting down until you unlock the developer options. Once activated, you will see a message that reads, “You are now a developer!”
Go to Settings ->Developer options -> Enable USB debugging > Toggle On
Enable Settings -> Developer options -> Enable Bug Report shortcut > Toggle On
Once the issue is reproduced: Go to Settings -> Developer options -> Click on take bug report or Press Power button and then choose Bug Report from the Power down menu.
Wait for some time until the bug report is collected. It takes around 3 to 4 minutes to collect the Bug Report.
Then upload the BugReport to your personal Google Drive and then share the link to the BugReport via private message.
Provide observations of what you saw happen right before the bug report was taken. Please indicate the local time when you observed the behavior.

Also, please share the location with the ZIP code where you had network failure. Thanks.

Best regards,
Rich
