Moto G7 Power Battery Issue

2020-02-28, 13:07 PM

I have seen this issue come up in some older posts, but I'm not sure if they've been resolved.  I have been having problems with the battery not lasting as long as it used to... I believe this coincided with an update at the beginning of December.

This morning was a perfect example: I charged my phone over night (full charge), took it off the charger when I woke up, put it face down on the counter with the screen off, then I got in the shower. When I got out of the shower (about 15 minutes), it was down to 91%. It was down to 84% by the time I left the house (about an hour after unplugging). I am currently at 73% only 2 hours after unplugging. According to the Battery Usage page, the only apps that have run are YouTube (13 min, 2%), Chrome (21 min, 1%... from going through this forum), and Moto App Launcher (16 min, 2%).

I bought this phone for the amazing battery—and it was amazing at the beginning, when I got two full days out of a charge—but the performance has dropped to an unacceptable level. I have tried a few different things, starting as simple as turning off Location and Bluetooth to uninstalling the updates for the Google Play Launcher (I saw this suggested on another forum)...but nothing seems to be helping.

PS: by the end of this writing, I am down to 71% (a drop of 2%).

Quick easy thing to try is a,"Soft Reset".

Press and hold the power button long enough for the phone to reboot. This emulates taking the battery out and can clear glitches like this.

HTH :)

Thanks, I just tryied that after a full charge over night. Interestingly, it said the battery was at 90% after the restart... But it was definitely at full prior and still plugged in.

Update: After doing the "soft reset"and letting it recharge back to 100%, I took it off the charger. With (according to the battery usage page) 12 minutes of Facebook and 8 minutes of YouTube (1% each), as well as 26 minutes of screen time (screen brightness around 50%), I am down to 91% battery and it projecting that I have 5 hours left.

Does this mean it's looking better? I would put too much store in estimates of how long there is left as it varies with use :/

No, unfortunately it's not looking better. It's been 3 hours and not that much use, but I'm still losing battery quicker than it should be. Also the app usage only adds up to 10% (2+2+1+1+1+1, see attached screenshot), yet the battery is down 24%... That seems fishy to me.

Hi Alex M.,

Can you please update your profile with the current phone, carrier and serial number -- this will help me investigate. Please make sure that the options under Settings > System > Motorola Privacy are on as well, and let me know (just reply here) if it's okay for me to look at your apps to see if they are a source of problems.

See here for the instruction. Thanks.

Best regards,
Rich

Hi Alex M.,

Thanks for updating your profile. I further checked this, and it looks like you're getting sudden battery discharge only after unplugging the phone to its charger. Can you please observe this behavior in safe mode?

To Enable Safe Mode
1. Press and hold the Power button until Power off comes up on the screen.
2. Touch and HOLD Power off on the screen until reboot to safe mode appears.
Just turn off and on the phone to boot back to normal mode.

Third-party apps will be disabled but you can still use regular stuff like SMS, calls, and other Google apps.

Let me know if there's improvement. So I can check again. Thanks.

Best regards,
Rich

I unplugged while on Safe Mode, as you asked, and have even kept it in Safe Mode for a bit. Unfortunately, it does not seem (to me) that the problem is with a third-party app. The battery is still draining at a very fast rate. According to the Battery a Usage page (screenshots attached), it has been 1 hour and 29 minutes since the last full charge. In that time, YouTube has been used for 2 minutes (1%), Moto App Launcher for 9 minutes (1%), and Chrome for 6 minutes (1%), plus 26 minutes of screen use...yet the battery is down to 85%. I have read some things suggesting that the Moto App Launcher is causing problems for others. Could this be causing my issues? Could it be a battery defect? Thank you for looking into this with me.
