Moto G7 Power softbrick after OTA update

2020-09-23, 17:23 PM

It seems after an automatic update to Android 10 from 9 happened, the system files themselves got corrupted, leaving me unable to use my phone for a bit of time.

To try and fix it, I used the Rescue and Smart Assistant and I got pretty sad to hear that the update I didn't sign up for means I have to also delete all of my user-data because of a softbrick. Even when I clicked the button to reformat it, apparently the process itself has failed:

I'm really not sure what to do and any help would be helpful.

You can do a Hard Reset but this will wipe the phone. Your contacts  and Calendar events will be saved but other data will be lost :(

Put this into a Youtube search,

moto g7 hard reset recovery mode

Hi AndroidMess,

Thank you for reporting. As suggested, this is the link on how to perform external reset from recovery. As for the LMSA, can you please try this steps below?

We would like you to delete the existing firmware that was previously downloaded and download a new copy just to rule out a corrupt file that could be causing the failure:

1. Close LMSA
2. Open the directory: C:\ProgramData\Rescue and Smart Assistant\Download\RomFiles
3. Delete any folder that is in the directory, which will be the firmware files for the device
4. Be sure to empty the Windows trash if low on hard drive space, as this deleted file is large
5. Open LMSA again and connect the device in fastboot mode to the usb cable
6. Start the process again to select the Moto device and start a new download of the firmware
7. Once the firmware is downloaded, start the Rescue process to see if the same failure is seen.

Can you please let me know what the results are? Thanks.

Best regards,
Rich

It might be C:\ProgramData\LMSA\Download\RomFiles

I don't have the tool installed on the computer I'm currently using, not sure if that's path, but it's either that LMSA or Rescue and Smart Assistant. I'll confirm it from LMSA team. Thanks.

It's confusing.

The application is at
C:\Program Files (x86)\Rescue and Smart Assistant
The data is at
C:\ProgramData\LMSA

(on my PC anyway)

While I'm pretty sad that all of my userdata is gone, this solution helped me to finally do a restart and fix my phone. Thank you :)

Hi AndroidMess,

Thanks for trying LMSA and I'm glad you're able to recover the phone. It's always good to keep your backup turned on, in case something happened like this. Please don't hesitate to post again if you need help. Thanks.

Hi @Cuddly,

I agree it's quite confusing. Thanks for correcting.
