Moto Play deselecting access point name

2019-02-21, 0:01 AM

I noticed my data wasn't working, and I found that my phone's access point name was deselected. I selected it and backed out of the menu, but the data didn't turn back on. When I went back into the menu I found the APN was deselected again. I have tried a lot of things short of a factory reset. Safe mode didn't work. Resetting access point names didn't work. Someone suggested i select the apn and then restart the phone while in that menu, that didn't work. Is there anything else I can do? A factory reset would be incredibly inconvenient.

I'd like to investigate this further

First, what carrier are you using the phone with?

Second, please update your profile with current phone, carrier and serial number -- this will help me investigate. Please make sure that the options under Settings > Motorola Privacy are on as well, and let me know (just reply here) if it's okay for me to look at your apps to see if they are a source of problems.

Having the same problem with a G7 Power.

Carrier is Total Wireless, a Verizon MVNO.

SIM worked fine in a G5 plus. The APN ia set correctly just not selected so no LTE, only 3g data.

This is the same behavior that I was seeing on a US G7 ( non-power/play ) with the latest build PPO29.114-16-5.  No amount of factory resets/carrier provisionins/network resets/manual APN editing would allow the APN to save when on the recent firmware.

I had to wipe and do a flash back to the original release firmware ( for the G7 it was PPO29.80-29, for the play it will be different ) before APN settings would save and I could get cellular data.  Everything "just workd" as soon as I booted with the old firmware.

EDIT

This is what my ***Removed***  looked like no matter what I did until I rolled back. BTW, on Ting/CDMA which is a Sprint MNVO.

***Dial Codes to hidden menus are not allowed***

We strongly discourage users from downgrading their software as it may brick your device. Have you updated to the latest software yet? If so, are you still seeing this behavior?

I'm no longer seeing updates, but at least the cellular data connection works.  I stepped it up, manually, to the January 1st security release without wiping the user data and I'm not planning on upgrading until I know that this bug is fixed.

EDIT: A modern phone without a LTE connection might as well be a brick already.  Trying to do anything on the 90's era 1x mode "3g" is a joke.

This is what my ***Removed***

***Dial Codes to hidden menus are not allowed***

What? Those ,menus are no big secret and haven't been for years.

INFO and others are parts of android. No more secret than Developer Mode optons.

Just not used regularly so accessed with dialer codes.

You going to edit out *#06# too? The dialer code to display IMEI instead of digging through the settings sub pages.

If not, where is the list of dialer codes allowed on the forum?

Well I help with 4 different Mototola phones (an E4, E4+, E5, and the G5+ being replaced witn the G7 Power).

I'd rather leave my phone in the profile and not be changing info all the time.

Is there a way to PM/email it to you?

Re: Moto Play deselecting access point name

So, I got a chance to test my SIM (not her's) in another G7 Power. (New out of the box at Best Buy).

It properly selected the APN and even enabled VoLTE.

Last week Motorola said they were sending a replacement and they wanted to look at the one that's not working.

Still don't have shipping info on the replacement though, but that test makes me hopefull that it will work.

Due to several reasons I haven't been able to test my SIM in her phone yet.

So there could well be a hardware fault on her phone.
