Play Store Notifications Fail To Fire

2019-10-26, 0:43 AM

I'm unsure if this is a Moto issue or a Play Store issue, but notifications for the Play Store fail to fire. The only one that does is after I download a new app. All the appropriate channels are checked, both in Play Store, Google Play services, & even Download manager.

I tried to wipe cache partition, but that is no longer present in newer OSes. I Cleared storage & cache for both Play Store & Android Setup (per instructions for this issue but re a non-Moto phone). I even redid Android Setup via Nova Launcher Activities (which might've caused all kinds of errors I'm unaware of. I already noticed a German Notification channel for the Google app, & I noticed my Google Voice input had German as one of the checked languages. Oddly, since I bought this phone the Setup started in German yet my phone is US Retail). Anyway, when performing Setup again via Nova Activities, I saw a Play Store notification in my Status Bar, but it quickly disappeared.

Again, the only Play Store notification I receive is after I download a new app. But I fail to receive Active downloads, App updates available, etc. I posted this issue on a Google Help board about 2 weeks ago w/ out any response.

I'm at my wits end here. Is there any solution?

Moto G7. Android Pie.

Re: Play Store Notifications Fail To Fire

I finally managed to get Play Store notifications to work!! & by golly, I'd been trying since August, when I bought my Moto G7. But seeing posts by other users who had this issue, albeit on various non-Moto/non-Lenovo devices & msg boards, I at long last found what seems to have worked for me.

One of the troubleshooting methods I used was to download a big app. In doing so, I actually received the 'Active downloads' notification, & also 'Finished downloads'. But that seems to have already been working for new apps, post setup, as I'd downloaded a smaller app & received the same. Might've helped, but it seems notifications for the apps I downloaded during the setup were the ones being suppressed. & while I did get 'Active downloads' working during updates of those apps, I had to troubleshoot that differently. By toggling Play Store notifications off & then on during the update for one of those apps, I finally managed to receive 'Active downloads'. & while 'Updated apps' still failed to fire, it eventually started working too, somehow.

Most importantly, the 'App updates available' notification now works. Oddly, this notification does not show up on Moto Display, despite MD's Notifications being on. Would be handy to see that notification before I unlock my phone like I see my other notifications. Unsure if its an oversight or a bug, but I see PS notifications on my non-Moto/non-Lenovo tablet's OEM lock screen. Now, I did receive 'App updates available' while charging my phone & while I was away, so I'm unsure if it'll continue to work while my G7 is unplugged. How I finally got that one working is unknown to me.

I also toggled Android Setup off in the Special Notification access, but I'm unsure if that helped. Did toggling it off hurt? Does Android Setup need to be toggled on, or is its function finished after the setup is complete?

I just don't understand why my Play Store notifications were being suppressed & singled out. Android 9 bug? Play Store bug? Android Setup bug? Moto G7 bug? Battery &/or machine-learning feature that takes time to start functioning? I guess nobody really knows.

Only time will tell if these fixes will stick. I Restart my devices weekly, so I might report back next week.

Now, if I could just get the 'Screenshots' notification working. But I don't even know if its suppression is by design or not. Oh well, my G7 experience feels far more complete now that I finally got Play Store notifications working.

After my weekly reset, none of the above troubleshooting methods stuck. What's worse, the method itself completely failed to work. But I ended up Disabling Android Setup, & that seems to have done the trick...so far. Hopefully this method won't cause any new issues. Who really knows? Only time will tell.
