Swollen battery

2020-10-26, 23:56 PM

My phone battery is swollen. This is my second moto phone with this exact same problem, having been a moto customer for years. If anyone from Motorola is here, please improve your battery QA process.

Hi sameezahur,

Sorry to hear that it happened twice. Thank you for your feedback though. We recommend that you have your phone repaired. You can find your repair options on our site here, and they include an extensive carry-in repair network that in many cases can provide same-day service, plus mail-in and some fix-it yourself options. You will find an interactive map that allows you to find a carry-in center convenient to you. We recommend contacting the repair center to ensure they are prepared for your specific issue. Please let me know if you need further assistance with that. Thanks.

Best regards,
Rich

I'm my experience, swollen batteries, especially on multiple devices, would lead me to suspect the charging equipment. If the same charging equipment was used, even once on both devices that failed, I would never use that charging equipment again. Consider a new charger as insurance against device replacement or repair. Consider OEM chargers for devices with internal batteries.

I have an interesting update: it was not the battery that was swollen, but the battery compartment. I.e. the phone's metal midframe was somehow warped, and was very slightly bulging out beneath the battery. That slight bulge was enough that the battery would no longer fit.

The phone hadn't previously suffered any physical abuse whatsoever. The only explanation I have is some sort of uneven thermal expansion had warped the metal.

Hi sameezahur.

Thanks for sharing. Are you trying to fix it yourself? Please let me know if you can have it done by yourself or I would suggest reaching out the service center to physically diagnose the phone and have it repaired.

Yes, I ended up repairing it myself. I learnt something new, and it turned out to be cheaper. It seems to be working well so far, we'll see how it goes!
