Backup not working G7 Plus

2019-04-06, 10:24 AM

When going to settings > system > backup, the button "Back up now" is greyed and all active backups say "Waiting to backup". Forever.

Without being able to Backup my phone it's useless. Any hints?

I have seen similar issue posts from the G6 and none of that "solutions" worked...

I have it on charging and wifi. Checked on Gdrive - there was never a backup done from this phone.

Brandnew Moto G7 Plus, 3 days in operation, security update done (1.1.2019), 1% of 15GB storage on Google account used.

Solved! See the solution

A google search shows this is reported on almost every brand  of phone with no single solution other then to wait for it to fix itself.

It seems to date back a couple years and Pixel3 and Galaxy s10 are reporting the same issues - so not just old or new phones. Some say a google app update fixed it for them.

I know i have seen this with individual backup items like SMS, and it eventually fixes itself.

Hmhh, to be honest I have not seen this widespred and I have googled a lot before to post. In fact I was switching from Galaxy S8 (which had Pie - security February 2019) to MOTO G7 and it worked absolutely fine. As I did a backup just before installing the MOTO and then the restore from S8.

I wonder more why the latest patch from Motorola is January 2019?

So Motorola is saying that this not working backup is an Google issue? Really, can't see from the internt...

I am a volunteer, but when i google "android backup grayed out" i get 200K results:

I find Pixel  https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/1670523?hl=en

Samsung https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidQuestions/comments/aopob1/google_backup_not_working_option_grayed_out/

https://forums.androidcentral.com/android-pie/947193-google-drive-backup-disabled-android-pie.html

I didn't say whose problem it is, but it appears to affect many brands.

You can try removing and readding your google account to see if that jump starts thing.

I don't like to rely on just Cloud/Phone backup systems.I like to keep copies of all my phone stuff on my Laptop/PC.I usually do this via USB cable.

If you can backup all what you need this way I would do a Factory Reset. On more than one Android phone over the years the O/S updates have messed up the phone's functionality.I've found a Hard Reset/Factory reset installs the updated O/S correctly and gives full functionality.

Viel Glück :)

I wonder if a restore from backup from a different phone is the cause of the issue? I have never had good luck with restore from backup when migrating hardware and/or OS versions.

It works, but not everything comes over correctly.

Yes, this is also what I usually do regarding the pure data (Pictures etc.) - backup on PC. However I'm keen on Android Backup as it's just convenient - includes Wallpaper, all Apps, system settings, SMS, ... But yes, could theoretically also be without. And I was assuming in the year 2019 it should meanwhile work without hassle:-)

Re: Backup not working G7 Plus

2019-04-08, 19:08 PM

I was resetting to factory reset and tried again with the restore (as it's just convenient!). Next step would have been no restore.

But then I wondered about some quotes people did - for some it's working and for some not.

I usually restrict Google on my phone pretty much (no personal ads, no "Hey google", no geolocation, ...) and so on. The more I learn Android, the more I also see that Google tries to restrict (I could also say "hates") Microsoft apps - for instance Outlook is an unsecure mail client for google.

So what worked: I did allow Google everything (as by default) on my mobile (location, ads, voice, ....) and deinstalled Outlook. And hey, suddenly the Button "Back up now" appeared! Pressing the button is working and also automatic backups are now done (every 2 hours or so).

Now if I have patience, I will restrict Google back to original and see if this stops working again. Not to state personally at the the nd, that my trust with Google is now even at a lower level than before (and maybe due to this sentence my Backup will stop working again?:-)

0 person found this solution to be helpful.

This helped me too

Glad you got it working, and thanks for letting us know what you did. Maybe other will get some ideas if they run into the same issue.
