Really? No Band 71 for G7?

2019-02-08, 23:31 PM

Is it true the Motorola G7 Power and G7 Play have band 71 but the G7 does not? I have seen the specs listed this way on Motorola website.

Struggling to make sense of this. I have been holding on to my G4 Plus while waiting for Band 71 support. But if the top of line G7 does not have it I may have to move on though I really do not want to.

I love my Moto but my next phone will not be one. Waited a year to buy top of the line Moto G phone with Band 71. The G7 appears and Band 71 is only for the lesser phones. Stinks to be a Moto fan... a former Moto fan I guess.

Band 71 is in the 600Mhz range. A band with longer range, good for rural areas. Also it would penetrate buildings better in an urban setting.

Also noticed this.

Why on earth would the "play" have it, and the "regular" not? It's supposedly the same chipset, I thought.

Makes no sense at all. Complete miss, if true.

That is the way Motorola list the specs. I have not verified their information is correct but I have not seen anyone refute it.

In any case I moved on in a certain amount of frustration. And that frustration cost me a lot of money. (ha-ha) I bought a OnePlus 6T which arrived today.

No Band 71 for G7.  Just finished a chat with customer support and here is the response:  (Names have been changed to protect the innocent!)

ME:  I am looking at the Moto G7 phone and cannot find an answer. Does this phone include Band 71 support for T-Mobile? I notice that the Play and Power variant do, but it is unclear on this model...
MOTO:  Let me check. A moment please.
MOTO: Still checking.
ME: No wonder I had trouble finding the answer! :)

MOTO: As we can see, Band 71 is not available in G7 Version.
MOTO: This are the only bands available LTE band 1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900), 12(700), 13(700), 17(700), 20(800), 25(1900), 26(850), 66(1700/2100), 38(2600), 40(2300), 41(2500) .
ME: unfortunate, was planning on buying this phone. (Have been very happy with Moto G phones) Any reason the lesser capable phones have it and this one does not? Will it ever have that capability?
MOTO: We apologize but we don't have the exact reason why it is not available on this model. You may ask it from our Support Forums because some of our support Engrs. are responding on this page.

This is a major issue for a few customers.  I have coverage issues where I live and was looking forward to using this band when T-Mobile rolls it out in our area.  I also travel to rural areas that are currently covered by Band 71 and don't want to lose that capability.    Sorry to leave Motorola, my family and I have been very happy Moto G users...

Thanks for passing on that conversation. Indeed, I wanted very much to buy a Moto G7, after being very happy with my G4 Plus for 3 years. Instead, I moved on to another manufacturer who did provide Band 71 support. Get your act together Moto/Lenovo. What possible rational explanation is there for having Band 71 support in 2 of your lower echelon G7 phones but not the top of the line G7? Very disappointed.

T-Mobile just added 600/700 antennas to two towers in San Diego County.  If they expand to my neighborhood soon, I'll get the Z3 Play to get 600 with up to 20 MHz up and down.  I like the notch-free AMOLED screen, too.

Otherwise, I'll wait for Black Friday.
