Re:Moto G8 Power throttles 60fps video down to 30fps in YouTube and other apps

OK, thanks for the update. I just noticed something new. If you have Microsoft Teams open during a video call (with the picture-in-picture window) it completely fixes the frame drops on YouTube, and not only that, but the app drawer frame drops as well. Also performance of all apps is improved, and app switching is noticeably faster. Even Mario Kart Tour has much smoother performance. I think your CPU governor is being too conservative. I'd fix it myself if I could root my device but I don't want to void my warranty.

Thanks for providing the additional details. I'll make sure to send this to the team working on this.

Re:Moto G8 Power throttles 60fps video down to 30fps in YouTube and other apps

Another update. I found that installing the app "CPU Load Generator" from the Google Play Store and enabling 4 threads is able to keep YouTube videos sustain a 60FPS framerate. 3 or less is not enough to keep it smooth. I think what's going on is that the CPU is not enabling more cores when needed. And by using Teams during a video call or the CPU Load Generator app I just shared it forces the CPU to use more cores. The whole system feels more responsive as well. Make the CPU governor more intelligent please...

Moto G8 Power laggy videos on YouTube and etc

2021-03-14, 18:33 PM

For some reason, 60fps videos look like they're dropping frames all over the place, if you set a video to 1080p60 on YouTube for example, it will look as if the video sometimes changes to 30fps... it's so annoying, and on Stats for nerds it doesn't show any dropped frames at all, which is even weirder. I also tested on VLC and the same thing happens. This problem happened in Android 10 as well, but after updating to Android 11 it only got worse. Factory resetting the phone didn't solve the issue, and I saw other people with the same issue here in the forums. Please fix this!

I'm using the RPE31.Q4U-47-35 system version on Brazil, by the way.

Hello, I'll do my best to help. Dropping frames on YouTube could come down to network limitations and buffering, however, dropped frames would have been picked up by Stats for Nerds on Youtube. Since Stats For Nerds is not showing any dropped frames, how are you measuring this? Is there a video of your phone that you can show it dropping the frames?

It is some sort of cpu governor/throttling issue.

This thread seems to be about the same issue:

Re:Moto G8 Power throttles 60fps video down to 30fps in YouTube and other apps

@Agent_Zeke already confirmed this is an issue. The bug report I generated shows there are dropped frames at the OS level, which won't show in the YouTube stats.

10-21 00:20:46.591  1000  1061  1061 D SurfaceFlinger: mHwcFrameMissedCount 0, mGpuFrameMissedCount 1529

10-21 00:20:46.627  1000  1061  1061 D SurfaceFlinger: mHwcFrameMissedCount 0, mGpuFrameMissedCount 1530

10-21 00:20:46.661  1000  1061  1061 D SurfaceFlinger: mHwcFrameMissedCount 0, mGpuFrameMissedCount 1531

... and so on. Wiggle your finger and these messages stop and the video remains smooth.

Also, I just received the upgrade to Android 11 and my phone feels a little smoother, the whole UI is more fluid and responsive. Nice job.

But sadly the dropped frames in 60fps video on YouTube persists.

The only difference I notice is that the framerate no longer locks to 30fps, but as a result you get a sort of a speeding up and down jittery effect that's very annoying. The test video I showed earlier shows this issue extremely clearly.

Hi kimbjo213, how are you? Still using the same device? because I currently have a moto g8 power and I'm facing the same fps drop problem all over my cell phone for no apparent reason, and Motorola doesn't have any expectation of fixing this one day, I would like to ask for some tips if you have to get around this problem. in addition to the "cpu loader generation" app. I appreciate if you can answer me or anyone else.

No, I don't have my Moto G8 Power anymore, I sold it and upgraded to a Poco X3 Pro. The performance is incredible and it plays videos without a hitch but I will miss the clean stock Android experience with enhancements from Motorola. MIUI is just not the same. I was considering getting the Moto G100 but the fact that it had no stereo speakers like the Moto G8 Power put me off greatly. Other models like g30 g60 etc don't even include a magnetometer and are using budget Snapdragons SoCs. Maybe that's the reason my Moto G8 Power kept dropping frames. Moto likes releasing attractive looking phones with underpowered processors, and taking away important features like magnetometer and stereo speakers from their new offerings. How unfortunate. I wish Lenovo treated the Moto G line with more dignity rather than just looking to maximize profits by deceiving their customers. Sure, it will work wonders in the short term but in the long run you end up losing loyal customers who swore by the Moto brand like myself.
