Only 31 Mbps broadband speed test

2020-10-26, 19:35 PM

My Motorola G8 power will only achieve 31 Mbps while my Motorola G5 plus will achieve 110 Mbps through my Virgin media broadband provider. Wife's Motorola G6 plus will also achieve 110 Mpbs. What's wrong with the G8 power?

Hi MrCintheUK,

This is interesting. Not sure how to answer why though, let's try doing basic troubleshooting. First, I would suggest try resetting your network setting (Settings > System > Advanced > Reset options > Reset Wi-Fi, mobile data, Bluetooth). Also, try unpairing your WiFi (Settings > Network & Internet > WiFi > tap the gear icon next to your WiFi name > Forget). Restart your phone and see if that helps. Thanks.

Best regards,

The reason is with the wifi on the phone. I have spent all evening today messing around with everything and what i can see is that the phone is not seeing my 5GHz wifi network and its using only 2.4GHz where the max spead will be 40MBs

Outside of the US market, I believe all G7 and G8 variations only support 2.4 Ghz.

As per other poster I think the UK version does not support 5 Ghz WiFi,

However my home broadband only does 17Mbs download but is consistent and good enough for watching live streaming even in HD. It's not always about the Top-speeds but the consistency of speeds that can be more important. The same goes for 4G/LTE against 3G phone network connections. A good 3G can beat a Patchy 4G.

HTH :)

Yes its true that sometimes older tech can beat newer but it isnt exactly nice on few monts old phone to realise that wifi dosnt cover 5GHz range. Like when everyone moves and uses 5G you intentionally say NO i'll keep just 4G on the newest model :) And yes i get it its not Flagship model too but its not Lite even.

Yes, did all that, thank you. I've managed to get it up to 51mbs by turning off Bluetooth. Is this normal? I've used the phone on other WiFi systems and still only get 51mbs. I now appreciate this is not a dual band phone so I believe this will only use the 2hz WiFi but my understanding is that this phone should still get somewhere near 70mbs.

While 2.4GHz is typically slower than 5GHz, ~50Mbps is not the theoretical maximum for 2.4GHz.

The other phones you've tested are using a 2.4GHz network and not 5GHz?

Unfortunately my current broadband maxes out at 50Mbps so I can't tell if I could get more, but I do get that 50Mbps easily - as long as Bluetooth is off. Turning Bluetooth on basically halves the speed to 30Mbps. So, that is very consistent with your problem.
