Moto phones fails to show capitalised letters in Greek

2021-01-06, 9:55 AM

Any app that use functions like `TextAllCaps` Will fail to convert the text to Uppercase and will maintain the original case when the phone is in Greek locale and will fail even with latin texts.

This has been tested in a Moto G8 +, G8 Power and G pro

This works ok in several Pixel, Samsung and OnePlus phones tested.

Where can I open a bug?

Hi Msesma,

Could you please confirm are you using the default keyboard or any 3rd party application? If you are using the default keyboard, can you just let us know how you are doing?

Thanks

Sunitha

Hi Sunitha

It is not a matter of the keyboard, although we are using the default keyboard.

How to reproduce:

Create a default hello world app that shows a message in a TextView:

<TextView
android:id="@+id/tv"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Hello World!"
android:textAllCaps="true" />

This "Hello world" text must be seen in the screen as "HELLO WORLD!" because the android:textAllCaps="true" line.

And it works well if the system language selected is any language but Greek. With Greek language selected it is shown as "Hello World!"

In other phones like Samsung, Pixel, or Oneplus it is shown in uppercase even with Greek selected

I have attached a Hello world apk for your convenience

Thanks

Miguel.

Thanks for the APK, but we can't install it due to it not being from the PlayStore. Can you provide an example from the Play Store that we can test with to duplicate what you're seeing?

Best regards,

Good morning Zeke,

You can use the built-in calculator to see the problem.
Selecting Greek as system language, DEG, INV and RAD keys are shown as deg inv and rad.

English

Greek

This is the built-in calculator in a Pixel 3a. As you can see, it does not have the problem.

Hi Msesma

Thanks, we were able to duplicate. We'll get it reported on our end. We can't guarantee there will be any improvements, but we'll let them know.

Hi Msesma

Just want to be on top of this thread. I have raised this to our engineers. I can't guarantee anything for now, but I will post back as soon as I have details to share. Thanks.
