Battery draining fast and random crashes.

It's taken me a couple of days to register something not quite right.

I first noticed the device 'crashing' during use. The Motorola splash screen appearing, and shortly after having to swipe to access to use the device again.

I'm now seeing rapid battery drainage (from full to 40% in less than 3 hours), and projected full drainage to be far less than half a day (6ish hours) even though I've not used the device.

When looking at battery usage I'm not seeing any app use of the battery except Screen, Mobile network.

I've restarted the device, it continues to rapid drain.

I removed the obvious candidate (AV software - Sophos Intercept - to verify it wasn't background scans etc) but this has made no difference either to drainage or random crashing.

I've tried 'recalibration' method, full charge/power off/leave 1hr extra etc.

I've restarted in safe mode, and the rapid drain did not occur in 2 hours of being in safe mode.

After rebooting from safe mode, the battery stayed 99-100% for almost an hour, then is suddenly draining rapidly again!

The device is running Android 13, the last security update was December.

This may have been happening for longer than the past couple of days but it's only in these last 2 days that I've noticed the random crashes during the day though I have recalled the need to swipe for access in the morning suggesting the device may have crashed during the night (I use the fingerprint unlock feature normally).

When the device random crashes I have to swipe for access (I don't need to unlock the SIM - so it appears almost like a soft reboot?)

Without accurate battery usage info I cannot tell which app (if any is draining the battery) or is the OS? I've had a couple of "System UI" freezes during trying to navigate the settings options also.

What do I try next? Other than removing apps one by one that've been updated in the previous week?

Note: I've removed apps I don't use often, and have quickly read recent reviews of the main apps I use that have been updated recently to see if anyone else has reported bad app battery usage/memory leaks etc.

I haven't installed any new apps in this period so I cannot easily point a finger to a culprit and say "this is what's changed this week!".

Any ideas please?

Re:Battery draining fast and random crashes.

PS. Other noticeable things - my widgets have gone from my screens and some of the app icons have no actual image now! So odd. I've also turned off bluetooth and NFC (I usually have these on and use bluetooth every day for listening to my music), and switched my WiFi to use an AC router and not my AX router just to cut down on the consumption used by comms apps. Usually my battery is good for the day. Even with these changes the plummet to 0 is occurring rapidly.

Re:Battery draining fast and random crashes.

Hi lad1138,

I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're experiencing with your Moto G82 5G. It seems like you've already tried a lot of troubleshooting steps.

Since the rapid battery drain did not occur in safe mode, it's possible that a third-party app could be causing the issue. You mentioned that you've already removed some apps and checked for any recent updates, which is a good step.

You could also try to consider a factory reset. Please remember to back up all your data before doing this as it will erase everything on your phone.

Also, can you please update your profile with current phone, carrier, and serial number -- this will help me investigate. Please make sure that the options under Settings > Motorola Privacy are on as well. (Need help updating your profile? See here.

Best regards,

Amit

Re:Battery draining fast and random crashes.

You post describves almost the identical issue I am having recently, intense battery drain, random shut downs. Tried a battery recalibrate. No new apps added.

I think it's related to an Android update that was downloaded. I really wish they'd "leave well enough alone" beside messing with people's phones. Only release upgrades when they are tested, and do not imact performance....

Did a factory reset fix the problem for you?

Re:Battery draining fast and random crashes.

Hi... TL;DR :- factory reset and reinstalling everything one by one. Grrr.

I spent over 2 days trying to track the problem, including using developer tools, examining logs and reviewing every app that had updated in the previous 2 weeks. Finally, I bit the bullet and factory reset as a last resort as I was now wasting more time looking to find the problem than just nuking the device and starting again.

The battery problem appears to have gone, though I'm manually re-adding accounts and apps one by one to the phone.

I DID NOT restore from backup - else if it happened again I'd be no further forward.

So it's taken me the better part of the week of constant effort to get my phone back to an acceptable battery consumption that lasts me the day again.

It's a complete pain in the backside but I saw no other choice.

Phone runs Android 13, and just this last couple of days has downloaded and installed Feb security patches to build number:-

T1SUS33.1-124-6-7

Hope you get yours sorted soon.

Re:Battery draining fast and random crashes.

Hi lad1138,

I'm glad to hear that the factory reset seems to have resolved the issue with your battery draining rapidly. It's unfortunate that you had to go through such a lengthy process, but sometimes it's the only way to truly identify and eliminate the problem.

Please continue to monitor your device and if the issue reoccurs or if you encounter any other problems, don't hesitate to reach out. We're here to help!

Best regards,

Amit

Re:Battery draining fast and random crashes.

Spoke to soon!!

Yesterday I noticed my barely used phone was down to 28% by the afternoon.

After a full charge overnight the battery is rapid draining again. Predicted 5.5 hours use today.

Also noticed the 3 widgets I use have locked up again and not displaying info.

Battery usage analysis so far today suggests:-

Google play services (1%), 3 hrs usage

Games (1%), 3 hrs usage

I noticed "Games" had used about 8 hours yesterday - I have no games on my phone.

I've not changed anything on the phone since I reinstalled my base apps last week, and everything has been working great up until yesterday.

The only other things of note:-

  • The February security update installed AFTER I factory reset - now running T1SUS33.1-124-6-7
  • The only things the play store have registered yesterday was the "Digital Wellbeing" app/not app (that I never asked for in the first place) being updated and some other built-in app (which is now not showing at all in the recently updated list ) moto something or other.

I've removed the widgets from the home screen to eliminate them as being a battery drain all of a sudden (maybe just a coincidence but worth testing).

And I've killed digital wellbeing from doing whatever it attempts to do.

Games has been placed into restricted apps for battery usage.

I'll continue to monitor but unfortunately the problem is not resolved and I suspect this is Moto apps running in the background or built-in google apps that do the same.  It's not likely 3rd party as the limited number of apps I've restored so far have not presented any issues for days after their reintroduction.

If anyone has any further experience, or other suggestions do let me know.

Thanks.

Re:Battery draining fast and random crashes.

Hi lad1138,

I'm sorry to hear that the issue has returned. It's quite puzzling that the "Games" app is consuming battery even though you don't have any games installed on your phone.

You've done a good job in trying to isolate the issue by removing the widgets and restricting the "Games" app.

As you've mentioned, it could be possible that some built-in apps are causing the battery drain. You could try to clear the cache and data of these apps (like Google Play Services) and see if it makes any difference.

Also, can you please make sure that the options under Settings > Motorola Privacy are on as well? So that we can look into this further.

Best regards,

Amit

Re:Battery draining fast and random crashes.

I have had exactly the same issue with my G32.  I first noticed that some Google widgets stopped working (stuck on "loading..."), and then the rapid drain.  My phone drained overnight and I missed an alarm in the morning as it was flat (maybe 60% the night before?).  I have also tried to remove updates or disable Google apps, but no luck.  The Google Play Services show the most usage and seem to be running continually.  I am reluctant to try the factory reset, and it seems that it may not help anyway.

I did not install any new apps during that period, so it is related to an automatic update.  I have tried to uninstall all the updates in the last week from Play Store, but no change.  I have most of the active widgets working again, but Google Calendar (or a 3rd party calendar using the same calendar store) does not work as a widget, but works in the app.  I was using Outlook for business Exchange emails and calendar, with the calendar and contacts syncing to the android stores, but I have now disabled those and no improvement.
