Edge 2021 and Verizon?

2021-08-25, 10:36 AM

Hi! Will the 2021 Edge be compatible with Verizon in the United States and if so will it support calling over WiFi? I was looking at B&H Photo to preorder the Edge 2021 and I get the impression it may not be compatible with Verizon. Please let me know all you can. Thank you!

Hello and thanks for taking the time to post your question. I'll do my best to get answers as quickly as possible. From what I can tell it will support Verizon, however, I'm not 100% clear on what level of support. Please give me some time to reach out to some people on my end to get confirmation. I'll update you ASAP.

Thanks,

Tom

It is my understanding that this phone will work on Verizon 5G sub-6 bands but not on the Verizon 5G mmWave bands (n260 & n261).  The mmWave bands are faster but they do not travel as far and are not widely available yet.

Do you have any information yet on the Verizon exclusive model? I'm trying to decide if I want to take advantage of the pre-order price and get the unlocked one or wait for a Verizon model. Where I live 5G is not going to be available anytime soon so I'm not worried about that. I'm wondering if the Verizon exclusive might be the pro model, which I would rather have. In the past, with the Z2 force and the edge+ that were Verizon exclusives, those phones are more appealing.

Only thing I am finding reported is that it looks like the Verizon model will "start" with less memory than the unlocked one, 6/128 vs 8/256. (Phone scoop, don't know how accurate they are and does "start" mean there will be more than one choice?) and I definitely want the 256.

If I order a pro from the UK, which says unlocked, would it work on Verizon in this country?

If I didn't need to replace my Z4 very soon I would just wait and see what happens, Thanks for any info you have.

One website hinted that the Verizon model with mmWave 5G would also sacrifice some ability to roam internationally.  Losing some bands or protocols?

If that were the case, I'd go for the international roaming ability.  My X4 is starting to show its age.

Hello all, I apologize for the long delay. I wanted to make sure I had accurate information. So for the retail unlocked model (which is the only one I can talk about), The phone will support the following

  • 4G/LTE
  • VoLTE

5G support on Verizon is currently planned for a future software update. The retail unlocked model being sold on our website does not support VoWiFi. I know our site is incorrect, and I'm working to get that corrected ASAP.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Thanks,

Tom

Could it be that VoWiFi is planned for a future software update?  My guess is if the phone can do VoLTE, what would be missing is the software to support the different protocol.  Maybe licensing cost from Qualcomm?

I can report successful connection to Verizon. It reported that my SIM card wasn’t 5G compatible but I don’t have 5G here yet.

Now, if I could just keep my icons from resetting whenever I cycle power!

Just a guess, but... VoWiFi is probably not going to work on a "unlocked" 2021 Edge version, but will work on a Verizon version. Which is very unfortunate if that's the case as has been with other recently released unlocked Moto phones. If you are in a area with bad service you might want to look at getting an extender.

Will any carrier support VoWiFi on the UNLOCKED Edge 2021?

What current model UNLOCKED Moto phones does Verizon have VoWiFi support for? Thank you!

Sorry, I can't really comment on the first question. Currently, all I can say is that the phone does not support VoWiFi on Verizon. As for the 2nd part, it has nothing to do with licensing. It really does come down to carrier certifications and agreements between the carrier and Moto.

Thanks,

Tom
