Edge secondary cameras cannot be selected when using third party apps other than Google Camera

2020-12-16, 6:28 AM

Hi

I'd like to know if like my case is, using Camera FV5 I'm not allowed to select 0,5x wide angle and 2x telephoto lenses and if it is due to a limitation by Motorola like the support of the Camera FV5 app told it's not an issue of themselves. . Camera FV5 is the camera app which has the closer functions like a pro camera with  manual function including manual focusing and bracketing but only using 1x lens all over the instances. I'd like to know if this can be corrected by Motorola or it is a limitation due to another reason eg. Android.

Below my email to support of Camera FV5 and their answer:

Hello Carlos,

We have a new device database (https://www.camerafv5.com/devices/) where we publish a list of devices, the cameras they support, and the key numbers of their cameras. If your device is not on the database, then we unfortunately don't know, but as far as we remember, the Plus variant did not support secondary cameras for third party apps, so it might happen the Edge is not exposing the secondary cameras either. This is not a limitation on our side, and most likely there's nothing we can do about it.

Best regards,
Flavio

Hi

I'm using Pro Version of Camera FV5 and I have bought a Motorola Edge  model XT-2073-3 with a camera of 16mpx and two secondary lenses appart from a normal of 1x
I'd like to know if latest version of Camera FV5 allows using the three lenses this model has (1x, 2x and 0,5x) since as of today I could not found the way to select a lens other that 1x
Thanks in advace and congratulations for this app that makes me capture picture almost as my pro camera.

Best regards

Third party cam apps will only support a single lens. There are too many multiple lens variations on phones these days for any cam app developer to cover them all. This is on all phones of any make. This is why people use modded versions of gcam which are very buggy.

Thank you Cuddy

Appart from this I have heard that Android 11 will limit permissions given to third party aplications to capture pictures. This does not mean that you cannot use third party cams but every time you use them you will have to give permissions case by case.

Yes, that's a welcome improvement to permissions and security.

Android (AOSP or Google etc) won't have any objections to a developer of an actual camera app to utilise multiple lenses but it really is too much work to cover so many variations of multiple camera setups on so many phones with very little reward for the amount of time it would take.

Thank you for suggesting me modded Gcam. I  am testing it and in fact it's buggy but interesting

"Buggy but interesting" is the perfect description. Also completely unsupported so take care if you use it.

Every one has its advantages. Camera FV5 allows an awesome bracketing but does not interact with secondary lenses. Gcam does interact but has not bracketing and a marvelous setting knobs some of them unknown for me.

Exactly! I usually have five or six camera apps installed for very specific  purposes.

What I have not found is any camera supporting Quad pixel mode.

I always buy cameras with a little phone :)
