Adjust the padding on status bar, so time isn't so close to the curved corners

2019-11-15, 14:29 PM

You can adjust the padding on the status bar so the left and right most characters aren't as close to the curved corners of the screen.

You need ADB installed on your computer (most easily as part of Android Studio, but you can install command line tools from the same page).

Connect your computer to the phone with USB, then get your command line to the folder containing ADB and run the following command:

adb shell settings put secure sysui_rounded_content_padding 6

where the value 6 can be changed according to your taste.

When you run this command you can see it implemented immediately, so it is easy to experiment.

I didn't expect to see my XDA post linked here, but i actually found a pretty annoying problem with this method. The padding restores to default every time you change the screen orientation and I couldn't find a fix for this

That is annoying. Of course the best fix would be if Motorola applied a default more appropriate for the shape of their screen.

Motorola One XT1941-4 notification padding

2020-01-23, 18:37 PM

Hi,

I have contacted live support on messenger and they told me to create an account here and describe the issue.

I have the current android build (PPKS29.68-16-36-13) and there is a problem with padding in the notification bar. Right now the clock text and battery icon are right at the edges of the display without any padding and it is a little bit annoying.

I found and other thread here on the forums which offer temporal fix (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/motorola-one-motorola-one-power/Adjust-the-padding-on-status-bar-so-time-isn-t-so-close-to-the/td-p/4574692). But I didn't find any permanent solution excepts rooting the device and using a custom application.

Is there any permanent solution to this issue? Will it ever be fixed in a software update?

Thanks,

Filip

Hi.

I think this phone just has a tough situation with notification bar real estate. It's tight up there and the team made decisions based on utility and trying to get more notifications and icons to show. I suspect that if they had opted for more padding and lost an icon, people would be posting about that too, or about too little space between them, etc. It's a compromise.

Thanks for pointing it out. We did report this but can't promise it will be prioritized.

Of course and it's a minor annoyance really. If it isn't low hanging fruit then it probably isn't worth it. For sure I'd value time spent on getting Android 10 out for the phone sooner or fixing VoLTE over this.

I really appreciate the reply. Thanks!

Re: Motorola One XT1941-4 notification padding

Thank you for your quick response. That is a little bit unfortunate. But for the time being, I have found a little workaround.

I was trying some stuff and by accident, I have found out that if you set the padding using the ADB method and the change is reset after changing screen orientation, it is possible to get the padding back without using ADB and it even survives device reboot.

The steps to reproduce:

  1. Set the padding using the ADB method:
adb shell settings put secure sysui_rounded_content_padding 6
  2. Now if you change screen orientation the padding will disappear
  3. Go to Settings -> Display -> Advanced -> Device Theme
  4. Switch to another theme that is not currently used and then back (Note: If you have an automatic theme selected, try to select both light and dark theme, it should change after selecting one or another)
  5. The padding should appear again

I hope someone else will find this as useful as me.

It works for me and I don't lose icons with padding set to 6.

I wonder if there is an ADB setting for landscape padding?

The padding is much better in Android 10 on Motorola One!
