'Charging connected device via USB'

2020-03-23, 19:25 PM
I'm now getting this Android system notification that won't go away. To charge the phone I now have to change the USB settings from 'Connected device' to 'This device'. It then thinks the supplied charger is a computer so charges very slowly. I can sometimes force it to Turbocharge by switching the charger off and on quickly. I've seen a few Pixel posts about this but not for Motorola. I've tried cleaning the port but still the same.

AFAIK there is great magic in everything USB related.

I think the device should charge no matter what mode you select while connecting it to your computer. Now the charging power may greatly vary, since USB ports can supply variable amount of power depending on what kind of port you plug your device into (0.1A-1.5A without implementing USB Power Delivery). Even trying to figure that out can be confusing.

Now this phone supports also supports OTG, which theoretically enables it to detect dedicated charging ports and draw more power (from an USB 3 port). Now even this is not to be confused with USB Power Delivery, which allows for even greater power, though I do not think that is really common in normal/laptop computers. Although your dedicated charger cable is USB PD compliant, it requires a compliant port to work its magic.

Now given this lengthy answer describing various possibilities, your phone may behave totally normally when connected to your computer, and if you think it should charge faster, you should look into what kind of port you actually use.

Try a,"Soft Reset".

Press and hold the power button until the phone reboots. Usually 10/15 seconds. This emulates taking the Battery out.

HTH :)

Thanks for your suggestions. It seems cleaning the phone's port did in fact do the trick. I had sprayed isopropyl alcohol into it but I didn't wait long enough. I now don't get the notification and charging is working properly again so I guess dirt must have caused a partial short across the data pins fooling it into thinking a device was attached.

Hi.

Glad it's working. We do NOT recommend spraying any cleaner on your phone, and instead suggest you use wipes. And avoid all ports and openings with cleaning fluids.

Regards,

I'm sorry for my previous answer, I seem to have totally misunderstood your post. (I thought you have problems with your device charging very slowly.)

This is the dumbest reply I've ever read. Also you should learn the use of the word "now" and quit using it in every sentence.
