T470 Crashes when lid closes

Within the last month or so I noticed that my Thinkpad T470 would turn off randomly when the lid was closed.

 

I check the windows event viewer and noticed several critical "Kernel Power" errors.  Of course the event data contains nothing of value, almost every value is 0 except for SleepInProgress = 4 and SystemSleepTransitionsToOn = 2.  

 

I haven't made any hardware changes recently, other than installing a WD black SSD 6 months ago.  I also don't remember changing any system settings recently.

 

I guess the next step is to determine if the failure is caused by a hardware or software issue and then going from there.  The question is how to determine the cause without simply replacing parts and changing random settings in hope of a resolution.

Dear customer,

I'm not sure what is happening on your system but I'm curious whether event viewer log and Windows Update log would synch something.  I mean when the symptom started to happen after Windwos Update did update something, you may try to uninstall that update. ( but some Windows Update items cannot be uninstalled )

I've tried using the start menu to sleep before closing the lid, It didn't appear to make a difference in if the program would crash or not.  

 

Today I actually opened my laptop after it slept for a bit to have it crash on me.  I opened the lid and the power button was still pulsing, after pressing it once it went off, and then reported the same error in the event viewer.  It was unusual since the screen usually comes on when I open my laptop when it is asleep.

I'm not to sure how to look up the information in the event viewer or the Windows Update Log. I've tried to preform a system restore when I first noticed the problem developing, but all attempts ended in failure. Windows would go and reboot acting like it was restoring only to comeback in failure.

I ran the BIOS hardware tests and all passed.

Have you used Fn key instead of power button to wake up the system?

No, I was unaware that the Fn key would wake the system up.

I attempted to resume today using the Fn button after the laptop went to sleep while the screen was open. After pressing Fn the system crashed. The event log appears the same, except SystemSleepTransitionsToOn = 7.

Dear customer,

In case you already had tried to update all softwares ( device driver and BIOS from Lenovo, and WD SSD firmware ) but you still see the system power off symptom at resume from suspend, I suggest to contact Lenovo Service.

I have the same problem but with a Thinkpad E545.

Problem started with AMD driver updates.  However, AMD keeps saying that it's not their problem but is caused by Lenovo drivers.  Checked AMD Radeon options and there's nothing related to closing lid.  I've removed/uininstalled all Lenovo power related software.  All power options are Windows 10.  Windows 10 power settings are set to "DO NOTHING" when lid is closed.  But problem persists. 

 

Laptop will crash (with black screen, not blue screen) whenever the lid is closed.  It's still running but non-responsive.  Have to hold down power button to force a shut-down.  Re-powering up Thinkpad takes forever and will come up with generic Windows 10 logon screen and not my personalized one.  After Windows log-on, Thinkpad will take forever to complete boot-up.  

 

Will appreciate any help with this problem.

I am seeing the same thing on my Lenovo X1 Extreme. Sometimes I close the lid and when I reopen later Windows restarts instead of resumes. My battery was at 93% when it restarted so it was not a battery issue.
