Re: Thunderbolt 3 dock Gen 2 and Thinkpad P1 lag

2019-11-27, 16:52 PM

I am having the same lag issues with my X1 Extreme gen2 and 230w Thunderbolt Dock. I am am also having the same issues as described by 100r above with the firmware updater tool "unable to connect" to my dock.

Is there a known fix for the firmware updater tool issue yet?

No, but from what I've heard Lenovo should be working on a fix. They are aware of the problem.

So, this issue still doesn't have an answer?

Not to my knowledge... Does anyone know how we can escalate this issue to get some attention from Lenovo? After spending $3000 on a laptop and $400 on a dock, im feeling frustrated that it doesnt work as advertised.

What seems to have worked for me is the following:

1) control panel

2) power options

3) system settings

4) Choose what closing the lid does

5) change settings that are currently unavailable

6) disable Turn on fast start-up

Don't ask me why but it does the trick for me and I hope it will for you (I have X1 Extreme gen 1 with thunderbolt docking).

Good luck!

Stan

Re: Thunderbolt 3 dock Gen 2 and Thinkpad P1 lag

I did not find the proposed "fast startup" changes to be effective.

The only solution thus far that appears to "fix" the problem is to disable the Intel graphics adapter in BIOS.  The subsequent effects on power consumption are less than desirable.  An workaround is to disable/enable the Intel adapter in Device Manager when the system starts to misbehave.  I should script that action out to save time.  I wonder if there is a detectable condition that could be used as a trigger to run the script using the Task Scheduler?

It has been over 10 years since the first "Optimus" hybrid graphics systems shipped, and the solution still is a mess.  I wish that MS, Lenovo, and the other system builders would get their acts together on this front.  Shipping these glitchy configurations as high-end solutions shows a certain amount of disrespect for the customer.

I don't like Apple products.  I don't particularly want "a Mac"; but I don't think I ever have been more tempted to do what my co-workers have been telling me and "just get a Mac".  For all their flaws, Apple tends to put the user expereince first in ways that Wintel designers just can't seem to do.  I don't think Apple engineers would be allowed to neglect of the customer experience to this extent.

I have couple of those guys, telling Just get a mac, and the truth is they are pissed at their Macs, as their keyboards are broken. And when you try to fix those type of issues with Apple, thats when you find out their real face.

I mentioned earlier, leave laptop screen on and there is no lag on external display.

Above fix didnt work for me on P1 gen 2

I am sure you are correct that the grass always appears greener on Apple's side of the fence.  I simply am tired of problems that should have been caught by QC before launch, or at least addressed within a month or two of product release.

I can appreciate that the "leave the laptop screen on" solution might work for some, but it's not an effective solution for everyone.  Switching display scaling between the laptop and external screens also is tricky.  My point being, there is no great one-size-fits-all solution to this problem.
