Windows 10 Update downloaded X1E firmware 1.0.0.23 when 1.24 is already installed

2019-09-12, 23:15 PM

Is this going to start a boot loop like last time it happened?

If 1.24 is already installed, Windows Update will show that the 1.23 firmware (aka BIOS) was successfully installed. The real question is who thought that pushing Thinkpad BIOS updates through Windows Update services was a good idea? The recent track record on the P1/X1 Extreme BIOS updates of which several "bricked" the systems when applied does not lend itself to unattended installation.

You'd think, but nope. It will actually first DOWNGRADE your BIOS from 1.24 to 1.23 and then enter a REBOOT loop because 1.23 fails to start (see screeshot),

This is absolutley infuriating. How many times do I have to endure this?

Everytime I have a system that works to my liking you can bet on Lenovo to proactively f@#k up something.

I'm still recovering from the MS Store auto-update Vantage enterprise to consumer debacle and now this.

I had the same issue. Instead of restarting the system, 1st uninstall the 1.23 firmware device that is showing in device manager including the software it is trying to use. Then run the 1.24 update from the Lenovo catalog and then let the system restart. It should then install 1.24 again. It may take two tries for this to resolve itself. I'm still not sure where the Lenovo firmware device came from, but it is the cause of the issue.

Yes, and then the moment you check for Windows Updates... 1.23 is pushed again.

Your scenario seems different than the one that I experienced. I let the system restart with 1.23 (I think that it took a couple of times), and then I deleted the Lenovo Firmware 1.23 device entry. I then started up the system again, checked the installed update log which showed that the 1.23 was not sucessfully installed, and then I downloaded the 1.24 BIOS update again and applied it. Eventually, the system was flashed to 1.24 and some messages appeared that the configuration had been changed. Running Windows Update again did not download the 1.23 pushed update again. There was nothing else that I tried.

Not in my case. As soon as I'm done manually reapplying 1.24, just like you, the system is flashed to 1.24 and some messages appeared that the configuration had been changed. But when I'm back in Windows 10 I get a taskbar notification that firmware update 1.23 was not installed succesfully and then Windows Update starts pushing 1.23 again...

But besides all this, who in her/his right mind decides to push a firmware older than the one already released two weeks ago on the support site?

Did you delete the firmware software when you deleted the Lenovo Firmware device in the Device Manager? When I look in my installed updates, the installation shows as failed with some code. Update does not offer it again for some reason. Are you part of the Windows Insider program?

That may be the issue. Are you on the Fast  or the Slow Ring.

"Release Preview". I figured the insider program could be the reason ?

I was finally able to block the Lenovo 1.0.0.23 firmware update using the Microsoft Show or Hide Updates tool and break this vicious reboot cycle.

This helped me too

Yes, I found this article. But for now I'll just use the little Microsoft unitlity above to simply hide it while somebody at MS/Lenovo fixes it.

There is definitely a problem where X1E and P1 gets downgraded to 1.23 by Windows Update and we are investigating it.  Sorry for this trouble.  Here is some more information:

1.  BIOS has always been in Windows Update, since at least 2017.

2.  Windows Update will only push BIOS updates if you are in insider program.

3.  You can prevent BIOS update initiated via Windows Update by changing the BIOS setting in Security -> UEFI BIOS Update Option ->  Windows UEFI Firmware Update.

Thanks for the new information. Given that the track record on recent BIOS updates has been a bit shaky, wouldn't it be advisable to set the UEFI Update in the SECURITY BIOS tab to DISABLED as the default?
