RAZR Bluteooth file transfer problem

2020-02-09, 19:12 PM

When I transfer a picture from my new RAZR to my PC with Bluetooth, the file extension is not included with the file name. The .jpg is left off. This causes me to have to rename every file I transfer on my PC.

I checked the phone and the extension is on the file but it gets transfered to the PC with some arbitrary 4 digit number for a file name with no extension.  Anyone else have this issue?  How can this be fixed?  Motorola Chat support was useless.

Can you provide a sample file name?

Just want to confirm, on your phone the correct extension appears but when transferred to your PC, the extension is lost?

Does this apply to photos you take with the RAZR and screenshots/downloads/other images?

As an example, the file name on the phone is "/storage/emulated/0/DCIM/Camera/IMG_20200209_120621754_hdr.jpg".  What is sent to the PC is file name "3876".  No extension, no direct relation to the original file name.  I can rename all the files after the transfer, adding a .jpg extensions, and they are fine.  I should not have to do this.

I have only tried this with pictures I have taken with the Razr.

Until you get a better answer install the free Google photos,

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.photos&hl=en_GB

Sync/Upload your photos off the phone and they will be backed up for Safety and then you can download them to the PC from,

https://photos.google.com

HTH :)

Thank you for this.

I tried replicating this issue on a Mac, and here is what I have found:

- Screenshots and downloaded images -> success (transfers file contents and file names and extensions)

- Photos taken with the RAZR camera -> partial success (file transfers, but file name is altered and extension is removed)

I am still able to open the photos without changing the file name on my Mac - the Mac does recognize the file contents just the filename is wrong.

I was able to overcome this using the following (and I admit it is time consuming):

On your RAZR:

 - Go to Apps

 - Open the "Files" app

 - Tap "Images"

 - Tap "Camera" (along the top)

 - Tap and hold one of the photos to select

 - Tap the menu (three vertical squares)

 - Select (Rename)

 - Change the filename to something shorter without special characters or spaces

 - Tap "OK"

 - Transfer the file again to your PC

Following these instructions worked for me. The file was sent with the correct filename and extension, like the downloads and screenshots.

Please let me know if this method works for you as well. It allows us to narrow down the possible issues (could be a Bluetooth file name length issue) or something else.

Also please share: RAZR SW version, Kernel, Camera App version, and the make, model, and OS of your PC.

Okay, I tried this.  I had the same results as you, Mac versus PC differences aside.  If I change the file name on the phone (to something shorter), it will transfer properly, including the file extension. However, this is probably not a great workaround.  I can actually change multiple file names faster on the PC than on the phone.  As you said, this is probably an issue with the length if the file name generated by the camera and/or the Bluetooth transfer software.  Either way, it is a software problem Motorola needs to address.  Thank you for taking the time to confirm the issue.

Thanks for taking the time to test. I'm glad we have the same results.

As for "who" - we need to see if this is part of the BT spec, in which case the fix may be in the camera app to alter how it saves files, or in the BT driver for the RAZR.

I've alerted the forum owners and they've already looped in the BT developers but they probably won't see it until tomorrow morning.

Just keep an eye on this thread, updates will be coming after we've had a chance to take a look.

Thanks for your patience.

Thanks for reporting. We're looking into this. We have a couple similar-sounding reports on other devices.
