W520 + docking station: blackscreen crash (possible static electricity/power issue)

2013-02-01, 18:18 PM

I have a W520 and the docking station (type 4338).

I have a recurring, easily reproducible problem which causes the screen to go black and the computer to stop responding. When this happens I have to hard-reboot and I lose all my work.

It happens like this:

  1. The laptop is docked
  2. I return to my desk
  3. I touch the fingerprint reader to unlock Windows
  4. Upon touching the fingerprint reader, the screen immediately goes black and the laptop is dead. The power light remains on, but nothing works.
  5. Hold the Power button to turn it off.
  6. Sometimes (but not always) I must remove and reinsert the battery before it will boot again.

I suspect this is due to a discharge of static electricity (our office is carpeted, and this wouldn't be the first such problem I've had with Lenovo's docking stations).

It is really disruptive, and happens on a daily basis unless I take extreme care to ground myself before touching the laptop. Does anyone have a workaround? These things are supposed to be rugged.

@mac - I have a work-around. Type in a password instead of using the fingerprint reader. :smileyvery-happy:

What happens if you move the mouse to wake it up instead of using the FPR? My FPR is fairly unreliable - only responds about 80% of the time. I have mine set to not sleep unless I tell it too. The i always wiggle mouse to wake, then swipe finger. I have a doc (dont know if its the same one), and have never seen the exact problem you describe.

Generally the computer hasn't gone to sleep, so waking it up is not necessary. I just liked the FPR because it saved me from having to type in my password every time I unlock the screen.

Unfortunately I can't keep using it in this state. I've lost work too many times. Chalk up another interesting hardware feature lost to Lenovo's shabby quality control.
