OEM Vista Business 32 to 64

2007-12-16, 16:21 PM
I recently purchased an X61 (7675-CTO) with 4GB RAM.  The system shipped with Vista Business 32bit installed with a OEM license.  I'd like to install the 64-bit version.  I've checked the Microsoft and Lenovo support sites, both indicate that the hardware is compatiable.  My probelm is the license and media.  Is it possible for me to obtain the license and media for the 64-bit version without purchasing a retail license?  I tried to order the meda from microsoft but they wouldn't complete the order because the license is OEM.

Thank you for your help,

Ira

I'm not the expert on this by any means, but I can confirm the hardware is compatible with Vista 64 bit.

I do not think there is an upgrade path as the Microsoft COAs (Certificates of Authenticity) found on the bottom of the system are specific to a Windows Type and bit level (i.e. "Business 32 bit" or "Ultimate 64 bit")  Thus, I am pretty sure it is a time of purchase decision only.

I thought I saw something about this somewhere and a quick google refreshed me:

If you purchased Vista retail you already have the license for 64 bit. If
you want 64 bit XP you will have to buy it. If you have an OEM version of
Vista 32 bit, you will have to buy the 64 bit version.

since i could not order my T61p with vista ultimate x64, i ended up using this method to change over to 64-bit.   it's 100% legal so long as you own a legitimate vista license.

just like the retail version, vista OEM COA decals do not specify that the licenses are for 32-bit-only.   whether it is OEM or retail should not matter since you are paying for the license, not the bit architecture of the software.   this method of licensing is new with vista and does not work for any other microsoft OS.
