y510p does not recognize SSD on first boot.

2014-01-11, 3:46 AM

I have a new y510p I just received this week. First thing I did was replace the 1TB HD with my own OCZ Vertex 4 256GB SSD Drive.

When I power on the laptop for the first time, it does not find a bootable device (goes through network devices, then says no bootable devices). If I use ctrl-alt-delete to reboot the laptop, it then finds the drive on its own and starts booting into Windows.

I'd like to understand why this does not work on the first boot? I went into the BIOS and saw it says there that no drives are detected.

This worries me slightly, as perhaps one day it will decide to no longer recognize the drive after the ctrl-alt-delete?

Anyone else experience this, and have a work-around?

Thanks!

Tried upgrading the firmware for the SSD, but still no luck. Still only recognizes the drive after a reboot. I noticed from cold boot, it will not recognize the drive, but a warm boot will recognize it (meaning system never actually powers off, just resets).

Would love any input on this, thanks everyone!

Hi,

Just a guess on my part:  the drive takes a little to long to initialize on a cold boot and BIOS times out before detecting it.  On a reboot it never power cycles so it doesn't have to go through its cold boot power up sequence.

Had a similar problem with a Crucial SSD until I updated the firmware.  This might be a good question for OCZ too.

Hey Z,

I appreciate your response! That's actually what I was thinking as well. What's odd is even after updating the firmware it seemed the issue was still present, however I just had my laptop off for a while, and booted it up and it booted right into Windows.

I was thinking about this. The first boot after the firmware upgrade probably took a while to 'finalize' the firmware upgrade, as firmware upgrades do require a power cycle.

Perhaps the firmware upgrade did solve the issue afterall, and it only took another power-up after the initial to get it to function properly

I guess my advice to anyone with the same issue using an OCZ Vertex 4 drive is to upgrade to at least 1.5 firmware (which is what I'm at now, and it's working properly). Beware that OCZ's 1.3 -> 1.4, and 1.4 -> 1.5 will destroy data on the drive, so if it's your primary drive, back everything up.

Glad this is working now!

I'm having the same problem but with the factory SSD on  port 4, any ideas?
