Fingerprint sensor not working for Windows 7 login

2014-02-15, 23:30 PM

I saw someone else had this problem and was able to fix it by entering an incorrect password at Windows login.  Unfortunately, that did not work for me.  When my laptop initially boots up, I cannot use the fingerprint sensor to login to Windows 7 - only my username appears where I have to enter the password.  However, once I am logged in, if I log out or lock the computer, then the fingerprint sensor works fine for logging in to Windows.  Does anyone know what could be causing it not to work the first time when Windows initially boots?  Any help would be appreciated!

What ThinkPad do you have? e.g. L420, L430, L440, etc

What I heard is that this is a Windows 7 bug that is fixed in Windows 8 but Microsoft so far decided not to release a patch for Win7.  We're checking again with Microsoft to see if they plan to fix it or not.

Problem Description:

Fingerprint icon is missing after periodic logon attempts in Windows rebooting test cycles, Event Log shows error:

BioCredProv      The Windows Fingerprint Credential Provider failed to enumerate its tile.

The operation failed with error: 0x800106bb.

Solution:

The error 0x800106bb is caused by  “not enough RPC threads”; it’s a known issue fixed in Win8 (not fixed in Win7).

I have the same problem on an Thinkpad E540. Lenovo is telling me to return the laptop for repair. Is this "not enough RPC threads" an issue with the hardware or software? Since I am going on a cruise in 20 days and I was planning on bringing this laptop with me, I'm concerned about a wild goose chase.

I assume you're talking about the problem where fingerprint doesn't work after reboot but it works OK after logout or lock.  Is that right?  What I know about this problem is that it's still being debugged between Microsoft and Validity (fingerprint supplier).  It is definitely some software problem.  It is not a hardware problem.

If instead you are talking about some problem where your fingerprint never works, that's a different problem and it may be hardware.

Basically, I think you are correct. Initially it never worked... but Tech support download a new verson of the Lenovo Fingerprint reader v. 5.9.9 that allowed it to work... but then the 0x800106BB (internal error) occured about every 2nd or 3rd time and I wasn't able to get around that. Lenovo is requesting the entire laptop back and is sending me a box. However, there were two other problems that I am having with the E540 that they didn't know about (1) occasional hang at bootup or shutdown that a forced shutdown and reboot resolved, and (2) internal microphones not functioning well (garbled, weak, and muffled). I guess the days that you receive a laptop and is perfect first time around is a thing of the past.

I found that when I added 8 Gb (for a total of 12 Gb) of RAM, that my problem basically went away. I still get the occasional failure as I previously documented... but the addition of memory has definitely helped.
