Audio problems after Windows 8.1 upgrade - U410 touch

2014-03-26, 21:44 PM

Hello, I know lots of people have been having sound difficulties after upgrading to Windows 8.1 and there's lots of different 'fixes' floating about the internet. None of them have worked for me so far, so I'm appealing for help here.

Before the upgrade, I never had any sound problems. Since then, the audio usually (though not always) seems to work fine when I first boot up Windows, but after a little while the sound just disappears. There are no error messages and no indication on the Device/Driver manager that anything is wrong - the sound simply just stops working. If I navigate through to 'Playback Devices', select the speakers, click 'configure' and then 'test', I get the error message 'Failed to play test tone'. Audio files, for example an mp3 in itunes, simply won't open and play (even silently).

I've updated to the latest 8.1 Conexant drivers via the Lenovo support website, and it hasn't solved it, even after multiple reinstalls. I've tried uninstalling all audio drivers, and then letting Windows find them automatically when I boot up, and it hasn't solved it.

On a side note, I've also noticed that even when the audio is working for a short while after first booting up, the 'test' function on the speakers configuration doesn't work quite right - the left speaker makes a clear sound, but the right one only a very brief one before stopping.

What's going on with 8.1 and audio, and why hasn't Microsoft or Lenovo issued a fix yet? If anyone has any ideas about solving this, please let me know asap and I'll be eternally grateful!

Many thanks...

Hi Jjs1,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

I’m sorry to hear that the Audio is not working as expected after upgrading to Windows 8.1, as per the Update consideration document all the drivers should be updated to latest version and then Windows 8.1 should be updated this will resolve most if the compatibility issue. Below is the links with steps and information to upgrade the OS (Operating System), hence I suggest you to restore the computer to Windows 8 and then follow the instruction provided in the update link:

Do post us back if the issue still persists.

Best Regards

Shiva Kumar

I have a Lenovo Yoga 13 and I encountered this problem yesterday, months after I installed Windows 8.1. One of the fixes documented here solved the problem:

1) Press Windows Key+R to open the Run window and type services.msc

2) In the Services window, select Windows Audio and click Restart from the pane on the left or the right-click menu.
