Re: IdeaPad U330 Touch - Bad WiFi Reception

Are you sure that we are talking about the same unit of measure? I measured 10 mbytes/sec which is around 80 mbit/sec. Do you expect to see 50+ mbytes/sec? I doubt it.

I'm not putting back the stock card unless I have issues with this one so I can't really tell how does the new one compare to it. So far it appears to be better than the stock card, but there are external factors that I can't contol, so I'll need some more time to see if I run into any performance issues with this.

I can compare it however to another laptop. I know it's not that useful, but this is the best I can do right now. The other (MSI) laptop is bigger and much more expensive, so it's not a very fair comparison. The two laptops were at the same location during the test, roughly 7-8 meters far from the router. I think at 2.4Ghz the MSI has slightly better signal, at 5Ghz the MSI has much better signal. Might be related to the difference in the antennas, I'm not sure.

Re: IdeaPad U330 Touch - Bad WiFi Reception

WirelessN supposedly boasts max speeds of 600Mbps, so that's 75MBps,  I said ~50 to be generous, the thing is we're getting ~12MBps, around 16% of the max speed allowed by WirelessN.

And yes I know there's numerous factors I'm not accounting for like interference I guess, but I don't think it should account for this much of a difference.
I think the biggest problem we have with this laptop, signal-reception-wise, is the placement of the antennas.
According to the user guide(pdf page 5) for the U330 they're located in the hinge. Which I'd think is probably the worst place to have them at.

Ok, so we are talking about the same thing then. If there's a LAN speed tester that can measure such high speeds I can give it a go. For my use case 10MBps is plenty and honestly in the 2.4Ghz range I'm happy if I can consistently get half of it. With the old card sometimes it was really crawling and I was getting exactly 0MBps :).

Re: IdeaPad U330 Touch - Bad WiFi Reception

I have ordered this card:   BCM943228HMB BT4.0 MINI PCIE Wifi Card 04W3764

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Thinkpad-E135-E330-E335-X131E-BCM943228HMB-BT4-0-MINI-PCIE-Wifi-Card-04W3764-/191632695392?_trksid=p2054897.l4275

It cost not much so its worth trying. I've seen on Youtube how to replace the WLAN card.  I hope it will work despite it might be not on the list of accepeted cards. Different FRU No.

My Ideapad U330P is rather slow. I reach 20/10 Mb when testing on a broadband testing site. My connection is  100/10Mb (down/upload). 3m from router.

Win10, latest drivers and BIOS 7ccn62ww.

I do not get better when I changed to another WLAN router with nothing else connected. Lots of gadget using same router might be a factor too.

My wife get 95/9.8 Mb with her Toshiba Portege Z30A via 5Ghz to our router Netgear WNDR 3700

I'll update when I've tested the card if accepted by the PC

One more thing:

My wifes Toshiba has even worse data rate on the 2.4GHz wifi.

It is either a general problem with WLAN cards in laptops with 2.4GHZ or there are other gadgets disturbing the 2.4GHZ connection in our house. Maybe neighbours routers, all other stuff using 2.4GHZ like home alarm system (wireless detectors, main unit, operator panel), all smartphones etc etc.

If replacing the WLAN card in a sloooooow laptop, 5GHZ is the deal, right?

SUCCESS!!!

The new cheap card was easy to fit and worked direct at startup

(drivers needed to be upgraded from Device manager, bluetooth and Network adapter.)

Upgraded my Lenovo Ideapad U330 to  dual band2.4/ 5Ghz for about $15US with shipping!

Found 5GHz connection to my router direct. Logged in and verified download and upload speed. www.bredbandskollen.se

Now 95Mb/10Mb!!
My connection I pay for is 100/10Mb (down/up)

Verified this card:   BCM943228HMB BT4.0 MINI PCIE Wifi Card 04W3764

New card

Card is still working just fine. I have seen that the limitation of wifi speed is my Internet connection I pay for, not the wifi card.

Speed to router up to 300 Mb/s that I guess is the limitation of my router.

After more than a year I must say that I really cannot recommend this card

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/BCM943228HMB-Wireless-802-11abgn-Bluetooth-4-0-Half-MINI-PCI-E-Card-for-Lenovo-Y410p-Y510p/32222649252.html

It keeps on dropping wifi and sometimes only a complete reboot fixes the problem.

I think I'll still give the laptop another chance and order the card that Perqele recommended.

My biggest issue is the crappy reception and overall stability, tho I'm not sure replacing the card would do much, at least reception wise.

If you do notice an improvement let me know.

My IdeaPad U330 could loose the wife sometimes, less with the new dual wifi card. No need to restart computer. Right click on the wifi icon at activity field beside the battery status, fault trace and repair...

I run Windows 10. Works with Win 7 too..
