Where should I put my laptop cooler? [w540]

2015-04-19, 12:52 PM

Hey all.

I am a happy owner of the w540, but in graphic intensive games the laptop becomes way too hot and starts to stutter. Making most games unplayable after 10-15 minutes.

Ive tried alot, and now bought a laptopcooler. (A notepal u2)

It lets me play 2 coolers wherever I need the most cooling, but my question is, what is the best spots to cool it?

Because it doesnt seem to do much, and I have no idea where to ideally place them.

For reference I added a picture;

Any help is appreciated.

Definitely the left side. It's where the GPU and CPU are.

Since the W540 is Haswell, which has an unlocked voltage slider, try undervolting to reduce heat output.

If the cooler has the setting to blow air into the machine rather than way from it, choose that.

Unfortunately the amount of "slack" you have to undervolt is different between each individual chip. You'll have to spend some time finding the lowest stable voltage.

Here's a starter guide:

You should be able to Google around for more information.
