Weird! U350 + Win7 - shows less usable memory (2.84GB) with 4GB than with 3GB?

2010-07-23, 13:29 PM

Hi,

I have a Ideapad U350, which came with Windows 7 32-bit, and 3GB of memory.

I just wanted to extend the RAM so installed instead of the 1GB of RAM a new one of 2GB. Before, Windows 7 shows "3GB installed and 2.87GB usable" but now, it shows "4GB installed and 2.84GB usable".

Now, I know that 32-bit Windows 7 will typically only show something less than 4GB if 4GB is installed, but I was really surprised that when I had the 2x2GB memory installed, Windows 7 showed 2.84GB!!!

In other words, Windows 7 32-bit is showing less usable memory when the 4GB (2x2GB) memory is installed, than when 3GB (2GB + 1GB) memory is installed...

I'm kind of puzzled about this. Just to be clear, as I said above, I *KNOW* that with 32-bit Win7, it wouldn't show the full 4GB, but I expected something like 3+GB usable with the 4GB, not < 3GB!!!

Can anyone here explain why this is happening?

Thanks,

Dragos

Thanks for all info.

I know that 32-bit architecture is limited to 4GB but I was really surprized to see that for 3GB installed Win7 is showing 2,87 usable but for 4GB is showing LESS - only 2,84 usable. I was expecting to see 3,1-3,5GB usable for 4GB installed. That means that if I install a 2GB RAM module instead of the existing 1GB I'm just waisting my money because the system doesn't read or use it.

That's crap!!!

run command prompt by pressing windows + r and type "dxdiag" and check the memory, again.

Yeah, dxdiag.exe is showing 4096 MB available. It's not normal anyway, Win 7 OS should show/use at least 3,1-3,5 GB and not 2,84.

Any idea when a new bios will be released for IdeaPad U350? Since summer heat my pc fan never stops. I mailed Lenovo asking for a new BIOS but you know chinese people...

I'm dazzled!!! I installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit instead of Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit and RAM usable memory is the same: 2,84GB!!! I did a clean install formatting C: but I did not format and delete the hidden OEM partition which came with Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit. After installation usable RAM was 3,84GB. I installed critical & recommended windows updates, restarted my PC and surprise: usable RAM was 2,84GB!!! So it's no use to install 64-bit version...my usable RAM is 2,84. Any idea why?

Re-seating the RAM modules didn't solve the problem.:smileysad: I suppose that this issue is because I installed some 32-bit applications. I think I must avoid this and install ONLY 64-bit apps. For example I installed the 32-bit MS Office 2007 suite because some time ago I bought a license for 32-bit. I will reinstall the 64-bit OS version and will get back with conclusions/solution. Thanks for your support.

it's because of 32 bit windows, you can use all the memory on 64 bit windows.
