S10 RAM Upgrade Issue

2010-12-08, 0:11 AM

We're trying to upgrade our Thinkstation S10s to 8 GB of RAM. (2GBX4) The first batch went pretty smoothly using Crucial RAM CT25672BA1339. they worked fine with out any issues.

The 2nd batch we had issues, the machine will not POST, you just get 8 beeps.

After testing the new RAM (they work fine on S20), changing to a lowe speed, we still had the same issue.

After talking to Crucial's tech support and compareing the working and nonworking chips.

This is what we found out, the working chips were lower density (there were 18 chips total), while non working ones only had 9, their suggestion was to order memory with the lower density or check to see if Lenovo has any BIOS update.

The last BIOS update for S10 was 2WKT47A release Sep 09, which is what we have.

As for ordering the lower density RAM, the part # is the same, there's no way for us to check the density until we get the part. So anyone have any other suggestions?

I don't have an answer for you, but I am just about to upgrade my S10's RAM as well. I want to double check that I am purchasing the correct RAM.

Is this the best RAM that's compatable with an S10?

4x  2GB DDR3 PC3-10600

ex: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104225

According to:

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=ThinkStation%20S10

Each memory slot can hold DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 PC3-8500 with a maximum of 2GB per slot.*

*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.

So, Is that 2GB max per slot ONLY for the 8500, OR does it also apply to the 10600 speed?

Also, CPU-Z doesn't really tell me what motherboard I have in order to determine what kind of RAM is compatable.

Fleche, you might be running into an issue with rank.  Look at the DIMM labels, and my guess is the non-working DIMMs will say something like 4Rx8, whereas the working versions are something like 2Rx8.  Quad rank for 2GB would be pretty old I think.  I'm not sure if S10 had any issues supporting quad rank versus dual rank or not, but I can ask around.

Can you be more specific about the beeps you're hearing?  Is there any pattern to it (i.e. 4 short beeps, pause, 4 more short beeps)?  An "8-beep" beep code doesn't ring any bells for me.

Kalensk,

While the S10 will run PC3-10600, it's not going to do it at full speed.  The MRC will clock the memory down to the supported speed of 1066MHz (PC3-8500).  So certainly don't waste any money buying PC3-10600 for that system if you can find PC3-8500 memory cheaper as it won't be able to fully utilize it anyway.
