x6 ultrabase slim 2nd hdd not mounting?

2008-09-25, 15:56 PM
Hello, I have a problem with my Ultrabay Slim 2nd HDD Adapter for the X6 Ultrabase. My laptop is the x60s.

I bought the adapter, which came with no software. I dropped my Seagate 320gb SATA drive in, and it fit well enough. The adapter+drive slide into the slot and fit snugly, and a green light on the adapter and another on the ultrabase are lit.

However, my OS (WinXP) does not seem to be aware of a new drive, and my BIOS doesn't either.

Is there some software needed that I do not have? Like a driver for the Ultrabay drive itself? I'm just trying to get my computer to recognize that there's a disk so I can format and partition it.... but so far, bupkis.

Hi dubi!

This is primarily a user-to-user forum, and people from Lenovo drop by now and then.

What do you mean exactly by "my OS (WinXP) does not seem to be aware of a new drive"? Where have you looked?

If the drive is not initialized you will have to right click My Computer -> Manage -> Storage, and initialize it, before it will show up as usable by XP.

USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.

Hey banana, thanks for the reply.

What I mean is that the drive is not mounted to the OS such that I can manipulate it as an object (format, partition, create/delete files, view properties, etc) in Explorer.

I have tried to do the Manage part, but it only lists my internal drive, not the Ultrabay Slim 2nd drive.

This is the hdd I am using in the adapter:

Someone on notebookreview suggested changing the jumpers to 1.5GB/s or something, so I am going to try that tonight.

That's bizarre. I confess I haven't got an X6 HDD adapter, but I've had other Ultrabase HDD adapters and they've worked without anything special - just showed up in XP and off I went. Is everything seated properly? Do other Ultrabay devices work OK?

I don't have any other ultrabay slim devices. When I bought the x60s, it came with an external USB dvd burner, and my battery lasts a good 6 hours, so I haven't needed any of the other devices than the extra hdd, which I thought would be more ideal than an external hdd.

I like to think it is seated properly, since there is a green LED on the hdd adapter itself, and the hdd in the caddy doesn't seem to be able to move any further into the slot.  I have a good 15 years or so of dropping hardware into slots (PCI, RAM, etc) so I don't consider myself a newb on the hardware-plugging aspect. But it's a good thought, and I have tried to push the hdd down further in the adapter, but it wouldn't budge and I didn't want to break it (I do lift weights, so I consider the force applied to be adequate)

I just wonder if there's some kind of "hotfix" or "windows update" that I'm missing... but from your experience, the software is largely irrelevant.

I'll post again when I've tried fiddling with the SATA jumpers

dubi,

have you tried the drive in another system? Is it possible that you've unluckily received one that's DOA?

I don't want to be the party pooper here, but it is a possibility.

I am having the same exact problem.  I have used another SATA drive (WD1600BEVS) sucessfully in my UB Slim adapter, but this new drive does not work.  I guess it is possible that it is DOA...but too coincidental that Dubi is having same problem.  The WD drive is much older, so I wonder if it is a 1.5 MB vs 3.0 Mb issue.

open disk management (start > run > diskmgmt.msc) and see if the drive shows up there.   you might have to mark it as online (right-click the drive name in the lower section and select ''online'') before it will show up in explorer.   diskmgmt will also allow you to initialize and format the drive.   if the drive is brand new, a quick format is all that's necessary.

(edit: fixed typo)
