Tab P11 Pro & the latest Files app (documentsui) version r_aml_301500700

For the last few days I've been having the native Files app (documentsui, not "Files by Google") stop whenever it is launched (such as when picking a file to upload, when selecting a download location etc.). The same thing happens when launching the Files app manually.

The version that is causing the issue is " r_aml_301500700 ". I can temporarily fix the issue by sideloading an earlier version of the Files app > https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/files-6/#variants

After a few hours however, version r_aml_301500700 gets reinstalled in the background. Strangely, the app only stops when display scaling is set to Normal or below - it doesn’t crash when display scaling is set to Large or above. This may suggest it’s a DPI/scaling issue?

I’ve reported the issue via the built in reporting feature (offered when an app stops). I can’t find any reports on this issue though, so I wonder if it is specific to the TB-J706F? I’ve tried booting into safe mode and the same thing happens, so I don’t think it’s caused by a user installed app.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

This issue was fixed in Files app (DocumentsUI) version r_aml_301501600 - I don’t know if this release intentionally addressed the issue, or if the issue was fixed incidentally. Annoyingly, no change log is provided by Google (as far as I know) so it’s hard to tell.

Hello @MattyS !

Glad to have you here!

Does this also happens when using the DocumentsUI app on a different device?

Are you also experiencing this issue when using other app(s)?

For this one, it would be advisable to backup the files that you have on the Tab P11 Pro and uninstall/reinstall the app itself then test it again.

If that still won't get the job done, you may check if there's an update for the app itself but if there's none, it would be really advisable to have this be reported to the DocumentsUI support so that they can check it on their end.

Re:Tab P11 Pro & the latest Files app (documentsui) version r_aml_301500700

Hi, I got the same problem today, while there was normal as of yesterday.

I can't upload images at websites, also can't add files when using Gmail.

The "file" app frequently crash.

I updated the system and checked that there is no updates on play store.

Does anyone know how to resolve it exactly? So many thanks. :)

No, not on the other devices I have access to.

Are you also experiencing this issue when using other app(s)?

Do you mean, as in, other apps stopping? Or, as is, are other apps causing DocumentsUI to stop? No other apps are malfunctioning. This only happens when the Files app is launched (e.g. as a file picker, or when launched manually).

For this one, it would be advisable to backup the files that you have on the Tab P11 Pro and uninstall/reinstall the app itself then test it again.

I’ve tried uninstalling updates (DocumentsUI can’t be uninstalled entirely). After a short period of time r_aml_301500700 will be reinstalled in the background. It will also be reinstalled if a user checks for and manually initiates a Google Play system update (Settings > Security > Google Play system update). After uninstalling updates, another version can be side loaded (such as r_aml_301300400), but this won’t prevent the system from automatically updating this version to 301500700.

The problem appears to be caused, specifically, by the most recent update. l’ve used the built in reporting feature (offered when an app crashes multiple times) to report the problem. I’m not sure what else I can do to bring this to Google’s attention. The frustrating part is that a user (at least, through normal methods) can’t block updates to DocumentsUI. If that wasn’t the case, then users could just turn off auto updates in the Play Store and keep an older version installed until the issue is fixed.

Unfortunately, as far as I'm aware, there isn’t an easy fix (for the reasons I've mentioned above).

Other than rooting, I guess, possibly by using ADB (Android Debug Bridge). For example, by attempting to completely uninstall DocumentsUI and then install an old/different version of DocumentsUI (that doesn’t auto update) - probably not a good idea to try something like this, unless you really know what you're doing.

It may be possible to use an automation app and/or a no root firewall (VPN) to block the update from happening, somehow. Even if this did work though, doing so may also cause other issues.

You can try setting display scaling to large, this seems to not make it crash. Not a real solution though, as it makes the UI too big for me.

The good news, I hope, is that this issue doesn’t appear to be limited to just the Tab P11 Pro. It’s interesting that, so far, reports only exist for higher mid to top tier tablets:

As far as I know, no news yet. 301500700 is still the most recent version of the Files app (DocumentsUI) available at APKMirror.

I’ve been sending reports using Android’s built in app reporting . I haven’t looked into other ways to report the issue yet, so I can only suggest that others follow the same process. The fact that this issue isn’t isolated to one manufacturer will hopefully increase the urgency for a fix.

I believe that the issue is affecting tablets that came with Android 10 preinstalled: tablets such as the M10 HD 2nd Gen and the P11 Pro. The M10 FHD Plus 2nd Gen, for example, came with Android 9 at release (updated to Android 10 via OTA) and doesn’t appear affected by this issue.

There are a few posts about this on the Samsung forums. If anyone is registered on the Samsung forums, it may be worth pointing out that Lenovo tablets are having the same problem and that the issue appears to be due to a buggy DocumentsUI release (Android’s native Files app) affecting multiple tablets that came with Android 10 at release.

I think the solutions mentioned in these posts will prove to be only temporary ones.
