Extremely low RAM frequency on Lenovo Ideapad S340-15API(Ryzen 5 3500U)

2019-08-29, 12:11 PM

Hi,

I have recently bought a new laptop(model in title) and I have noticed it runs slowish for its specs(low FPS in some leightweight games that should be no problem, extremely slow compilation in Visual Studio 2019 etc). So then I ran a benchmark and every component seemed to work fine except for memory.

As you can see the test scores are pretty **bleep** low considering the installed memory sticks are DDR4 2666 MHz. So then I opened CPUZ and found out this:

DRAM is 400 MHz while it should be 1333 MHz. I tried entering UEFI to solve this but there are no memory options available.

Does anyone have similar problems??How do I solve this issue?

Have you tried to update to the latest BIOS/UEFI ?

I already have the latest version installed.

One strange thing is that when plugging the laptop in the DRAM jumps to 933 MHz. Still not the expected value, though.

What happens when you cause extreme load on the system, connect it to the AC adapter and turn to Windows energy settings (just click on the Microsoft battery icon) to maximum performance? DDR4 RAM can actually downclock when it is not being taxed hard.

Already tried. Doesn't do anything.

I would honestly think that you are basing your results off benchmarks that say nothing anyway. Your system runs normal, doesn't it? Because on my Ryzen 5-2500U system it also reads out the RAM as 400MHz, the laptop still works flawlessly. I would guess a wrong readout. I just did a AIDA64 memory read benchmark with a few applications already running. It is just within spec for a system that is already busy. I attached a screenshot for you.

As you see, it reads out at 400MHz (same as GPU-Z and HWiNFO), yet it still performs like it should. AMD was never known for reliable readouts. I mean, the Package Power is also always read out wrong on Ryzen Mobile. So I wouldn't give a thing on what these apps or any unreliable benchmarks say. And if I recall correctly, Passmark is not known to be reliable.

You can just as easily calculate the maximum theoretical RAM speed. 2400MHz times 8 (a single channel features 64 bits) equals 19200MB/s, times two for the dual-channel equals 38400MB/s. I am well within the range for a normal load since mine equals almost 31000MB/s. If it were actually running at 400MHz, you would end up at 400x8x2=6400MB/s in dual-channel at best if that were true. You could download AIDA64 portable and run the benchmark for memory read/write speeds. I am sure they are well within reach of mine. When there is no need for the system to clock up the RAM out of its idle state, it doesn't. When my system is just running the benchmarks without anything else running, it just doesn't clock up. When it is used, it actually does perform like it should.

You see, that is the problem. It does not run normally.

Visual Studio takes about 10 seconds to build and compile a simple "Hello world" program, undemanding games such as Minecraft or M&B Warband barely run at 30 fps, the computer in general feels slow and sluggish, not what I'd expect on a new, decent spec-wise, product.

Anyways, which benchmark do you recommend if Passmark is actually unreliable? I'd like to find the weak spot so I could at least know what to fix/replace.

P. S. I tried reinstalling Windows and updating drivers, but to no avail.

Minecraft is (or at least was once) known to be causing high CPU loads, and Lenovo is known to use the minimum TDP settings, so I rather see that as the culprit in the case of gaming. The TDP in permanent high-load scenarios is just too low to appropriately feed the CPU and GPU. I mean, the Vega 8 can use quite a bit of energy itself, but the CPU will also need to clock higher. I would not necessarilly blame the RAM for it.
