Cannot install recent BIOS Updates (1.12/1.49) on T490

2019-07-24, 6:59 AM

Hey all,

I have troubles installing the recent BIOS updates on my T490.

Currently installed versions are:

UEFI: 1.09

ECP: 1.06

I don't have Windows on my machine so I tried it with the bootable images, both with a USB stick and a real old-fashioned CDROM.
The result was the same every time. I can boot into the image, get the screen with 3 options, but it ends with the error "The process does not recogize..." every time.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Daniel

Re: Cannot install recent BIOS Updates (1.12/1.49) on T490

Regarding T490, I reproduced the problem here and we will investigate it.  Meanwhile, I also found a workaround.

The situation that fails is trying to update from BIOS 1.09 to latest version, using USB key.  However, updating from BIOS 1.08 to latest version is OK.  So the work-around is to downgrade from BIOS 1.09 to BIOS 1.08, and then update from 1.08 to latest.

How to downgrade to 1.08 and then update to 1.49:

1.  disable Secure Rollback Prevention in BIOS Setup -> Security -> UEFI BIOS Update Option

2.  format the USB key, then rebuild it using this package:  https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n2iuj02w.exe

3.  boot the USB key to downgrade from 1.09 to 1.08

4.  format the USB key, then rebuild it using this package:  https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n2iuj12w.exe

5.  boot the USB key to update from 1.08 to 1.49

Let me know if this works for you, or if you have any questions about these steps.  Sorry for this trouble.

I looked deeper into the issue and I'm quite sure now that something is wrong with the provided ISO images. If I mount any of the images as a loop device on my linux machine or burn the ISO as it is to a CD, there's absolutely no content visible, as if it were empty. When I try to read the content out of the ISO image using geteltorito it grabs just 1 sector which is obviously not correct.

Still no ideas guys?

I haven't had a look with Linux tools or geteltorito, but with Win tools like 7zip it's normal for the ISO to look empty, FWIW.

When you say you've tried the USB flash approach, do you mean the below or something else?

Thanks, Z.

I mean something else. I just tried to create a bootable USB stick from the ISO image using geteltorito and dd. That - basically correct - approach to grab the image using geteltorito and copy that image to the USB device using DD failed for mentioned reason: geteltorito wasn't able to read more than 1 sector from ISO which is obviously not enough. What I also tried - I know that's weird and incorrect - I just copied the ISO to my USB device using DD. Surpisingly, it was possible to boot up with that device but the update process failed. I got exactly the same result with the CD burned with k3b (a Linux tool).

I also tried to create a bootable USB stick from the ISO file using a Windows tool ISO 2 USB. The creation of the USB device failed with an unspecific error.

Now I'll try the approach described in the referenced document - thanks again for the link. I'll let you know whether it works.

Best

Daniel

So, my next update.

I could create a bootable USB device using the Windows tool as decsribed in Z.' post. There was even "visible" content on my USB stick. I could boot into the meanwhile well known update tool.

Unfortunately the result was exactly the same as in my previous tries. See the attached screenshot.

It's really despairing. That's my third T-Series ThinkPad and I never had such a problem with BIOS updates.

On a related matter...

I've been trying to update the BIOS on my "pre-production" T495, which arrived around May 10 pre-loaded with BIOS R12ET28W (0.28) dated 3/19/2019.  According to the Lenovo support site for the T495 the latest BIOS is now R12ET35W (1.05) dated 5/16/2019. I've been unsuccessfully trying to apply that BIOS update for a day or two.

The T495 has no CD drive, so my only option is to use the "Windows utility" option which after seeming to start (and restart three more times) eventually fails with the following error message:

I then sought to see if I could build a bootable USB flash drive (since there's no CD available) from the ISO which is also available (strangely, since there's no CD available on the T495).  RUFUS failed to create the bootable USB from the ISO, claiming the ISO was not in the proper format. I also tried the MS ISO/USB builder utility, but it too claimed the ISO file was not in the proper format.

I then looked at the expanded folder (from the "Windows utility" and read the "C:\Drivers\Flash\r12uj35w\Instruction US - BIOS flash USB memory key.txt" file.  Turns out according to these instructions there is built-in a way to actually build a bootable USB from the expanded ISO file, through the provided MKUSBKEY.BAT file.  So I did that, and the USB drive was presumably built properly and successfully.

I then booted to the USB drive, and the utility started.  There were three options presented: 1 - README, 2 - update system program, 3 - update model number.  After reading README I next tried to use option 2, which I assume is meant to update the BIOS (although the word BIOS is never actually mentioned). This failed with an error claiming the system program file was not found.

So although it seemed this USB method had promise, it failed too. Bottom line: I cannot update the BIOS on the T495 either through the usual "Windows utility", nor from the bootable USB built by the MKUSBKEY.BAT file provided in the expanded utility folder which seemed to run to perfectly normal completion.

Anybody have any ideas?

Same here on my x390, i even installed Win10 afresh to try out all avenues. The package is defective.
I formally start a new thread because its a X390.

I understand that your T490 doesn't run Windows.  But do you have another windows system where you can build the bootable USB key by following the instructions in "Instruction US - BIOS flash USB memory key.txt" that is included in the n2iuj12w.exe (1.49) BIOS update package?  This worked on my T490, but I was already on a newer BIOS version than what you have, and I am not able to flash back to 1.09 to have another test.

If it still doesn't work, then I wonder if it's a unique problem trying to update from 1.09 to 1.49.  So could you please have a test trying to update from 1.09 to 1.44 instead?

@someotherguy

Thanks a lot for your feedback.

Yes, for my previous try I created a USB key by following the instruction.

I've just tried the same with the version 1.44 (n2iuj10w.exe) (thanks for providing the file btw).

Unfortunately the result was again the same, the well-known error "The process has not..." :smileyfrustrated:
