Slow UEFI bootup

2021-01-04, 0:30 AM

I have an X1 Extreme Gen 2 laptop. It takes longer to get out of UEFI then booting the OS. Systemd (I am using Ubuntu) reports times around 15 seconds in firmware and loader - that is from the time I press the power button to the time red Lenovo logo disappears and the OS starts booting.

Is this typical? It is slower than all my previous laptops (Like W530). I tried to disable almost everything in the UEFI configuration tool, disabled secure boot, Thunderbold security set to zero, disabled all the remote management things, enabled fast boot, removed everything but my SSD from the boot order but it did not change anything. What are the settings to use to optimize for boot speed? It feels like 1995, not 2021.

Turns out there are a lot of people with this issue with no solution:

And turns out one can eliminate the loader part by switching to systemd-boot as described here: https://blobfolio.com/2018/replace-grub2-with-systemd-boot-on-ubuntu-18-04/

Actually, I noticed that when I have my two monitors plugged in to the two Thunderbolt ports on my X1 Extreme Gen 2, it makes my boot 4-5 seconds longer. But I have Thudnerbolt disabled in the BIOS (as per here: https://thinkdeploy.blogspot.com/2017/02/new-thinkpad-bios-settings-for.html ). That sounds a bug - thunderbold is supposed to be turned off, so how can those monitors add 4 seconds to the boot? How do I report a bug to Lenovo?

So support suggested disabling Kernal DMA Protection and enabling Thunderbolt BIOS Assist Mode and with disabling "Support in Pre Boot Environment" for Thunderbolt, I am now at 6.4 seconds spent with the monitors plugged in and 6 seconds with monitors not plugged in. Still about 5 seconds longer than necessary but oh wel...
