How to reliably restart Windows on X230T connected to UltraBase 3 docking station?

2021-05-16, 11:29 AM

When I need to restart Windows after installing or updating software, the restart often hangs at the prompt "Press Enter to interrupt normal startup", but *only* when the X230T is docked in its UltraBase 3 docking station.  Sometimes it's enough to disconnect some USB peripherals from the docking station and restart the laptop, but sometimes the only cure is to remove the laptop from the docking station before restarting it.  I am now running Windows 10 Pro x64 20H2 (fresh installation, not upgrade in place), but I also had the same problem when running Windows 8.1 Pro x64.  What can I do to prevent it!

Hello rsbrux ,

Greetings

Are the drivers, firmware and BIOS up to date thru the support site?
Have you tried loading the default BIOS settings?
Update us soon as convenient

Re:How to reliably restart Windows on X230T connected to UltraBase 3 docking station?

I have the latest BIOS (2.75) installed and have been careful to keep everything else which I find relevant updated as I am notified of updates from the website.  Based on problem reports, I am reluctant to install Lenovo Service Bridge (LSB) and the driver releases generally include warnings against installing them unless the specific hardware or feature in question displays problems.  Can you be more specific than "drivers, firmware and BIOS"?  My SSD is running the latest firmware.  What other firmware should I consider?  The GPU, chipset and LAN drivers are all up to date.  What other drivers are involved in the docking station interface?

P.S. I found a DVD Firmware Update Utility (FWSB25) for the DVD drive (**bleep** UJ8C2) in the UltraBase 3.  However the instructions say:

 - The update utility will not find an optical drive in a Docking Station In this case, please remove the drive and install it into a bay in your ThinkPad.

The only drive bay in my X230T is the one containing my SSD boot drive.  How can I update the ODD firmware?

Better yet, how can I find out whether the ODD firmware even needs an update?

Hello,

I do not have a ThinkPad X230t myself, but I am wondering if there might be some kind of external USB drive plugged into the UltraBase 3 docking station that the ThinkPad is trying to boot from.  This could be an external hard disk drive or flash drive that's non-bootable (i.e., has no operating system on it) or some kind of card reader.  In the case fo the latter, it could even be built into another device that's plugged into the dock, such as a scanner or a printer.

In any case, try checking the boot options in the ThinkPad's BIOS to see if it is set to first boot from a USB device.  If it is, change it so that it first boots from the internal drive.  Perhaps that will make a difference.

Thanks for the tip.

The first in the list is "Windows Boot Manager".

I thought I had *disabled* *all* USB devices in the boot menu, but I found one still there, at the bottom of the list. It seems that the BIOS doesn't have an option to categorically disable USB devices. I suspect that it even adds them to the bottom of the boot menu when it finds them attached at boot time. If so, this is most annoying behaviour! The USB drive I found in the list is the second, unbootable partition of a drive whose first (also not bootable) partition, a CD emulation, I had already disabled: weird!

I thought this was resolved when my laptop restarted successfully after the last Windows update, despite being docked; this is something it previously had problems with. However, when I restarted it today, shutting it down with a USB drive attached and disconnecting the drive when the monitor went blank, the restart hung at the usual screen.
