Windows 10 Sleep mode issues: Shuts down all my programs

My x13 Gne 1. laptop has an issue where when it goes into sleep, especially anything "longer than a few minutes" such as hibernation, when I open the lid again, all my programs are closed as if the laptop restarted.

I'm performed a simple Google search of the issue, but haven't identified what might be causing this issue. I believe it has something to do with my Power Settings, but it's unclear.

My laptop config:

-> Windows 10 Home: Version 10.0.19043 Build 19043

-> I have both Sleep and Hibernate turned on.

-> BIOS: SMBIOS Version 3.2

I've looked into Event Viewer and I see this sequence of errors:

1. Miniport Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter #2, {bf03e24a-9689-4c6f-98dc-27c4b1e80039}, had event Fatal error: The miniport has failed a power transition to operational power
2. Dump file creation failed due to error during dump creation.
3. The previous system shutdown at 3:37:45 PM on ‎7/‎19/‎2021 was unexpected.
4. Audit events have been dropped by the transport.  0

I've temporarily disabled this Virtual Adapter by following this instruction: https://yoodley.com/microsoft-virtual-wifi-miniport-adapter/

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Re:Windows 10 Sleep mode issues: Shuts down all my programs

So, for me, I can tell you what didn't work.

1. Uninstall and disabling "Miniport Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter #2" doesn't work. It just gets reinstalled. I don't know what's triggering it.

2. Updating bios didn't really do anything.

However, I've turned off hibernation and it seems to have "solved" the problem for now. That's the best answer, unfortunately.

Windows 10 Sleep mode issues: Shuts down all my programs

Re:Windows 10 Sleep mode issues: Shuts down all my programs

That is most likely caused by a device driver failing to enter or exit a low power state, so step one would be to update all of your systems device drivers to the latest.

Next Run a Sleep Study report

1.  Right-click start and select Windows PowerShell (Admin) (or open a Command Prompt (Admin), and type:  Powercfg /sleepstudy  and press Enter

The command will create a Sleep Study report C:\WINDOWS\system32\sleepstudy-report.html which will contain details related to the last three sleep events.    Viewing the log may point to the culprit.

Also check for any Windows Memory Dump files located within the C:\Wndows\Minidump folder that were create recently, and either zip up and attach to a reply, or run WhoCrashed by Replendence and see if it can identify the problem, because most likely your system is crashing when either entering or exiting sleep mode.

Re:Windows 10 Sleep mode issues: Shuts down all my programs

Thanks for the suggestions. I can tell you that having shut down Virtual Adapter, the problem has not occurred in the last two days even though my laptop has gone into hibernate.

I don't know how to update the drivers for Virtual Adapter and I'm not even sure what it does. But I'm keeping it disabled for now.

Re:Windows 10 Sleep mode issues: Shuts down all my programs

Hello lenvo274392,

Greetings

Virtual Adapter is used for sharing your internet connection via portable hotspot from your PC.
If you aren't using it, let it be disabled for now until we fixed the problem.

You may consider trying these steps for troubleshooting:
Load the BIOS default settings, make sure you save it before exiting.
Install the latest drivers, firmware and BIOS thru the support site.
Run system file checker.
Update us how it goes.

Re:Windows 10 Sleep mode issues: Shuts down all my programs

I can now confirm it's this virtual adapter issue. When I look at the event viewer, I see this issue again when I last entered bad sleep mode.

It shows: "Miniport Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter #2, {bf03e24a-9689-4c6f-98dc-27c4b1e80039}, had event Fatal error: The miniport has failed a power transition to operational power"

Finding where this adapter is installed to disable it has been difficult. Any instructions would be helpful. The only instructions I found are for Windows 7/8, not Windows 10. https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht081547-how-to-uninstall-microsoft-virtual-wifi-miniport-adapters-from-the-device-manager

I've currently.

1. Have Mobile Hotspot set as off
2. Disabled on startup Windows Microsoft Hotspot Service at startup via System Config

3. Killed Windows Microsoft Hotspot Service from running

Further update: Initially, I couldn't find this "Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter" listed in the device manager as many articles stated.

However, there's a feature called "Show Hidden Devices" in Device Manager. Once you click that, I can now see it.

So, I've also "disabled" drivers. Shall see after a restart if that is a solution before I uninstall as next step.

Re:Windows 10 Sleep mode issues: Shuts down all my programs

Issue continues to persist. For example, I just ran  Powercfg /sleepstudy.

This is what I see from the report + Event Logger.

Sleepstudy shows:

1.  Bugcheck at 22:55:21. The BugcheckCode is 0xef, which leads me to this Windows article: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/debugger/bug-check-0xef--critical-process-died

Event Logger shows the following.

1. 10:23:34 > A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the TrustedInstaller service.

2. 10:55:21 > Dump file creation failed due to error during dump creation.

3. 10:55.27 > The previous system shutdown at 10:34:19 PM on ‎7/‎23/‎2021 was unexpected. and Audit events have been dropped by the transport.  0

Unfortunately, all these shutdowns are happening when the laptop is sleep/hibernation and I have no dump files. The last one was from 7/16.

I've ensured my bios is updated.

Any suggestions?

Re:Windows 10 Sleep mode issues: Shuts down all my programs

Hello,

Out of curiosity, do you have any additional software installed which could be binding to this network adapter and causing a problem with its transition to a suspended state?  My initial thoughts are packet capture software like Wireshark, third-party internet security software, and so forth.

Re:Windows 10 Sleep mode issues: Shuts down all my programs

Thanks for the suggestion, but no, I don't have anything like what you mentioned.

I can now say, the issues are consistent. This is what I've currently done.

1. Upgrade my AX200 driver to 22.60.0.6, which is what Intel latest, even though Lenovo latest driver is 22.40.0.7.

2. I've uninstall both Miniport Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter #2 and Miniport Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter

3. Turn off Hibernation.

Basically, if I leave the laptop and it goes into hibernation mode by itself, this happens. I also notice that my fan spins up and doesn't stop when this occurs. So, what I'm going to do try next is turn of hibernation to see if this happens only in sleep mode.

Again, unfortunately, no dump files. When this happens, even if I'm plugged in, there is no way to wake up the computer. So I'm going to see if I turn off Hibernation, at least it'll wake up from Sleep.
